Thank you, President Nicușor Dan, for your support of international exchange and for welcoming American Councils’ leadership for this week’s conversation.

We are grateful to Administrația Prezidențială a României, Ministerul Educației - România, and Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State for supporting FLEX Global and FLEX Global Abroad, giving more Romanian and American students the opportunity to learn from one another and build lasting ties between our countries.

American Councils for International Education - Romania FLEX Global Romania

For Ivo Ribeiro, the United States Timor-Leste Scholarship Program (USTL) made possible far more than a college degree.

Through USTL, which provides full scholarships for outstanding students from Timor-Leste to earn undergraduate degrees in the United States, Ivo became the first person in his family to earn a U.S. degree. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

The scholarship also enabled him to pursue two fellowships in Washington, D.C. His resulting publications included an analysis of how Timor-Leste can maximize the economic benefits of ASEAN membership as the country prepared to become the association’s 11th and newest member state.

Now back in Dili, Ivo is applying that experience as an Asian Development Bank consultant and operations lead for TEBEDAI Solutions, contributing to work that will inform public programs in Timor-Leste.

USTL is a program of the Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State.
