Walnut Hills United Methodist Church Walnut Hills UMC is an inclusive, LGBTQ-affirming church in the Des Moines metro committed to social justice, compassion, and faith in action.

As United Methodists we have historically shaped our beliefs around four paths:
• The Bible – how do we experience God in this complex series of writings produced by several cultures over so many centuries?
• Tradition – what has the Christian faith learned and taught throughout the years since Jesus lived on earth?
• Personal Experience – how has God nudged our individual spiritual journeys?

• Reason – how do we think using all the resources available to human beings? These four paths are like four legs of a table – they must each contribute to one’s spiritual balance. Focusing only on one’s individual experience without considering the ancient traditions can lead to imbalance. Reading the Bible without utilizing our God given intellect can lead to imbalance. Spiritual imbalance does not decrease God’s love for us but it certainly contributes to unrest and chaos in the community of faith and beyond.

On Sunday, we announced that Kathye Harrington-Taber will be retiring at the end of the year. The Staff Parish Relations Committee at Walnut Hills is grateful for the years of service that Kathye has blessed our church. Please join us in thanking Kathye and wishing her the best in retirement.

Meet our new Music Director, Susan Waller!

Some of you may know Susan, as she and her husband Chad worshipped from the early '90s (back when services were in the Western Hills Elementary gym!), raised their sons, and where she later served as Director of Music from 1998–2006.

Since then, she's spent 17 years in ministry at Plymouth UCC growing children's, middle school, and the historic Matins Choir, plus years weaving art, writing, photography, and spiritual coaching into congregational life. Thinking her music ministry days were behind her, Susan's been missing that sense of connection and now she's excited to bring all of it back home to Walnut Hills. 🎶

Join us in welcoming her to the next chapter of the journey!
