Did you know that children in under-resourced communities can lose up to 3 months of academic progress every summer?

It's called the summer slide, and it's one of the biggest drivers of the opportunity gap in education.

That’s not happening in our neighborhood! The Sequoyah Summer Program exists to change that with hands-on creativity, group problem-solving, real friendships, and trusted adults who make learning feel like living.

¿Sabías que los niños en comunidades con pocos recursos pueden perder hasta 3 meses de avance académico cada verano?

Se le llama el "deslizamiento de verano," y es uno de los factores más importantes en la brecha de oportunidades en la educación.

¡Pero eso no está pasando en nuestro vecindario! El Programa de Verano de Sequoyah existe para cambiar eso con creatividad práctica, resolución de problemas en grupo, amistades reales y adultos de confianza que hacen que el aprendizaje se sienta como vivir.

Meet Alicia Keathley, Community Schools Program Coordinator at Growing Together

Four years ago, Alicia found herself drawn to the neighborhood around Kendall-Whittier Elementary so much so that she moved her family there and put her kids in local schools. What started as proximity quickly became purpose.

"Going home at the end of the night and knowing this family doesn't have to go without because a community partner stepped in... has been really beautiful to watch."

Her philosophy? Everyone has value. Everyone has something to give. And if you cross paths with Alicia, don't be surprised, you're probably going to become a volunteer.

What a year it’s been so far, Kendall-Whittier!

This school year was proof that a connected community is a resilient one.

Growing Together is honored to serve our students and families alongside our extraordinary network of partners who poured time, resources, love, and belief into our neighborhood.

As we have closed out the 2025-2026 school year, we're looking back with gratitude, and now, we're looking ahead with enthusiasm and excitement.

This is growth in the making.

In Kendall-Whittier, neighborhood change doesn’t mean displacement.

Our partners, Purpose Built Communities, have coined a term for this: withintrification.

Through initiatives like the Kendall-Whittier Neighborhood Trust (KWNT), our neighborhood can experience real, positive revitalization while the people who built and have sustained this neighborhood get to stay, lead, and benefit from what's being built.

Since 2015, Growing Together has partnered with Purpose Built Communities and today, we are proud to be the oldest Purpose-Built Communities network member in Oklahoma.

KWNT is permanently affordable housing that keeps our legacy families rooted in the neighborhood they helped shape.

People don't fear investment. They fear exclusion, which is why we develop our neighborhood with the people who live here.

Our team attended the IEL's National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference in Long Beach and brought back so many lessons:

- Co-create the work.
- Listen.
- Act on what you hear.
- Include the people most affected in every decision that affects them.

It's not a new idea. But it's one we never stop recommitting to right here in Kendall-Whittier, every single day.
