Hope is a dangerous thing when you’re trapped in modern-day slavery.

This short film introduces a village of 117 people in northern India who are beginning their three-year journey toward sustainable freedom through the Schools4Freedom program.

Families who have lived without a single day free from fear. Without choices. Without education. Without the freedom to imagine anything different.�Their decision to share their stories is the first step toward change.

Three years ago, Nisha and her daughter spent their days working under the threat of violence in debt-bo***ge slavery.
They had no choices. No safety. No access to school.
Today?�Everything is different.
Nisha and her husband have leased land for agriculture.�They raise livestock.�Nisha learned tailoring skills.�And her daughter — who had never been to school — caught up to grade level and transitioned to a local government classroom. She wants to be a teacher and loves to sing.

Learning your rights changes everything. Not because it magically solves problems, but because it gives you the knowledge to fight back. When community members understand labor laws, know how to document violations, and organize collectively, they can challenge slaveholders, navigate corrupt systems, and demand the government services they’re legally entitled to. One training leads to one person advocating. That person teaches others. Power multiplies.

Their ancestors knew only slavery. Their children will know only freedom. This is sustainable liberation—breaking the chains of debt bo***ge slavery permanently.
After generations trapped in brick kilns and agriculture, these families now own their labor, their time, and their futures. Through education, government programs, and community support, what was once unimaginable is now reality. Freedom that spans generations begins with freedom that sustains a single family.
