ITS SWIM INSTRUCTOR SATURDAY!

Mia is a Swim Instructor AND Lifeguard, so she’s here helping keep your family safe from in and out of the water.

1. Why did you choose to become a Swim Instructor?

I have been a competitive swimmer all my life and have always wanted to give others the confidence to be comfortable in the water and show them how much fun swimming is.

2. What is your favorite skill to teach, and why?

My favorite skill to teach is rolls and floating because it gives parents and children peace of mind. It gives kids the confidence to know that if they were to fall into a pool, they would be able to roll onto their back, float, and breathe.

3. What have you learned about yourself while being a Swim Instructor?

I have learned that I truly have a passion for working with kids, whether it’s helping them overcome their fears or giving them peptalks before learning a difficult skill. I love watching the kids I teach grow, gain confidence, and seeing the smile on their faces after completing a difficult task.

4. Why should parents choose the Y for swim lessons?

The YMCA has amazing programs in place designed to help families sign up for swim lessons. The staff, lifeguards, and Aquatics team as a whole want to help adults and all kids to learn how to swim and be comfortable in the water. All of the swim instructors I have worked with are extremely compassionate, patient, supportive, and love teaching. The YMCA is a safe space for swimmers at any age and any level.

Show Mia some love in the comments! 👏🏻

The best part of teaching swim lessons is seeing the students take what they practiced in stage 1, and begin doing those skills Independently.

This stage is all about building independent forward motion and control in the pool. It’s where real swimming confidence takes off!🚀
Here is what your swimmer will master in Stage 2:
• 🐠 Independent Floating: Rolling onto their front and back completely unassisted for 10 seconds.
• 🚀 Forward Propulsion: Learning how to glide and kick to travel through the water on their own.
• 🔄 Changing Directions: Navigating the pool, turning around, and finding the wall safely.
• 🪙 Underwater Fun: Building extra confidence by retrieving sinking objects from the bottom.

We still have several spaces open In October! Sign up online today! YmcaLA.org
