ATTENTION SOUTHERN/CENTRAL ILLINOIS! Stand with Choate workers at the Du Quoin State Fair this Friday, Aug. 28!

DHS has announced their plans to downsize Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center, which would result in the layoffs of 250 members of AFSCME Local 141 and a sharp reduction in the availability of mental health/developmental disability services in southern Illinois.

We’re saying no way—Keep Choate Working!

Our delegates have returned from a long week of business at the 47th International Convention!

From passing dozens of resolutions and deciding on important amendments to the AFSCME constitution, to attending workshops and sectors roundtables to strengthen locals back at home, our 1019 delegates were busy making sure our local's voice was heard.

Highlights include a rally of thousands at the Shedd Aquarium to help in the fight to secure the first contract for our members there and the election of Patrick Moran of Maryland Council 3 to AFSCME International President and 23 year AFSCME member Nicole Pollard to International Secretary Treasurer.

Moran and Pollard replace outgoing President Lee Saunders and Secretary Treasurer Elissa McBride, whose phenomenal work over the years was celebrated by delegates throughout AFSCME. Our local wishes the Saunders and McBride well on their next chapter!

Make sure to attend the next local meeting on Sept. 9, 5:45 PM at 615 South 5th St. in Springfield to hear more about the convention from the delegates themselves!

DHS' sudden decision to downsize Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center, resulting in the lay offs of 250 employees, is indefensible.

AFSCME Council 31 is calling on elected officials to speak out and urge Governkr Pritzker and DHS to reverse this decision!

Sign the petition, reach out to lawmakers, and let Gov. Pritzker and DHS know we will not stand for these layoffs!!!
