On this World Mental Health Day, remember: If someone you know is having a hard time, you could be the difference they need to get them help. It's time to speak up about mental health....

A lifetime of service. A legacy worth celebrating.

AFFI President Emeritus David “Dave” Foreman will be inducted into the Illinois Labor History Society’s Union Hall of Honor on December 3, 2026!

Dave’s leadership helped move the AFFI forward over decades, and his commitment continues today as a member of Joliet Fire Officers Union Local 2369 and the AFFI Labor History Committee. Our headquarters in Springfield proudly bears his name.

The difficult scenes. The missed sleep. The stress at work and at home. The things we see—and the things we carry without ever talking about them.

It all adds up.

Check on your firefighters. Make time to listen, and remind one another that asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness.

One difficult call. One sleepless night. One more burden carried in silence.

Over time, it all adds up.

During Su***de Prevention Month—and throughout the entire year—take the time to check on your firefighters. Ask the question, listen to the answer, and remind them they never have to carry the weight alone.

"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11."

Illinois played a pivotal role in the creation of the Labor Day federal holiday due to the turbulent Pullman Strike of 1894. These actions prompted President Grover Cleveland to enact the holiday as a means of reconciliation with the labor movement.
Our state's deep labor history continues to inspire our organization even today. Because without Labor, nothing prospers...
On behalf of the entire Executive Board and Staff, the AFFI wishes all Union members and their families a safe and happy Labor Day. Enjoy the holiday responsibly!
