Today, Illinois colleges hand Washington the data for Trump's new federal earnings test, and students in social work, early childhood education, counseling, paraprofessional work and other public service fields could lose access to federal student loans because these jobs start at low pay.

But the federal rule isn't the whole story. Illinois public universities were already stretched thin by decades of underfunding. IFT Membership Secretary John Miller is calling on Gov. Pritzker and the General Assembly to invest in our universities so they can protect these programs, instead of leaving students to absorb the hit.

The list includes the state’s two largest public campuses, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago. Altogether, the five universities have spent nearly half a million dollars on AI-powered surveillance services from Flock.

IFT members from across Illinois came together for a powerful Lobby Day. We met with lawmakers, rallied with our coalition, and made it clear that students and communities must come before corporate tax breaks.

We delivered backpacks to lawmakers that served as reminders of what students are missing when funding isn't adequate, and how we can raise revenue to fill the gaps. (Spoiler alert - it's taxing the ultra wealthy!)

Let's keep making calls and writing letters through May 31 when session ends.
