The longest day of the year deserves a long poem. ☀️

NC Literary Hall of Famer A.R. Ammons — born on a North Carolina farm, shaped by its landscapes — once wrote a meditation on summer that ran over a thousand lines.
Happy First Day of Summer from Weymouth Center. Come find your own words in or gardens. 🌿

This Juneteenth, we honor two North Carolina Literary Hall of Famers whose lives were shaped by the very freedom this day celebrates.
George Moses Horton was born enslaved on a NC plantation and taught himself to read. He became the first African American man to publish a book in the American South — titling it The Hope of Liberty in 1829. He wrote and sold poems for decades, trying to purchase his own freedom. His enslaver refused. He remained enslaved until the end of the Civil War. The words outlasted the chains.
Anna Julia Cooper was born enslaved in Raleigh in 1858. After emancipation, she pursued an education with fierce determination — earning degrees from Oberlin College and, at age 66, a PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris. Her 1892 book A Voice from the South is considered one of the founding texts of Black feminism. She lived to 105, and never stopped writing, teaching, or fighting.
Both of their portraits hang in the NC Literary Hall of Fame, right here at Weymouth. 🕊️
