🌈🕯 Remembering Pulse | June 12, 2016 🕯🌈

Today, we honor the 49 lives lost and all those forever changed by the horrific act of hate at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. It was not only an attack on the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities—it was an attack on love, joy, and the right to exist freely and proudly.

At PFLAG Southern Pines, we remember them. We say their names. And we continue to fight for a world where everyone is safe to live and love as they are.

We stand with the survivors, the families, and our entire LGBTQ+ family—today and every day. 💔🏳️‍🌈

What better time to flex one’s LGBTQ+ advocacy than during pride month? 🏳️‍🌈
Fighting For Our Pride is our nationwide campaign focused on taking action at the state and local level, where many of the most harmful policies against LGBTQ+ people are being introduced and passed. Since its launch last fall, the campaign has successfully staved off numerous harmful bills and policies, and won protections for our LGBTQ+ loved ones across the country. Now with state legislative sessions coming to a close, our sights are set on the ballot box and how we can protect LGBTQ+ rights at elections nationwide. 🗳️

This pride month, let’s organize, adapt, and make sure lawmakers hear us loud and clear: attacks on LGBTQ+ people do not reflect our values, our families, or our future.

We keep seeing and hearing folks ask why there’s a whole Pride month, why isn’t there a “straight” pride month, and why do we keep drawing attention to it. Here’s why:
In the USA in 2025, there were just over 600 bills trying to rescind the rights of the LGBTQ community...in 2026, there have been almost 550 in the first half of the year! PrideFests are for everyone - q***r community and allies alike! Pride is an inclusive event, not exclusive 🏳️‍🌈

Being straight is the default norm in our society so there’s no need to “announce” that you’re straight because it’s already assumed. Pride events are about being a place of safety and celebration for people who feel attacked, harassed, beaten and even killed unless they “mask” and can pass as “straight enough”.
