None of this need have happened, all of this,
These unexpected gifts, this overflow
Of things we know, and things we’ll never know.
None of this had to be, but here it is,
The here-and-now in all its strange surprise;
A space to be ourselves in, and a grace
That spins us round and turns us to the Source
Whence all these gifts and graces still arise.
And now the One through whom all this was made,
Whom we ignore, on whom we turn our back,
Whom we denied, insulted and betrayed,
Gathers and offers for us all we lack,
Voices on our behalf creation’s praise,
And calls us to become the song He plays!

The prophet Jeremiah knew something deep in his soul. He knew that the most important thing in life is not comfort, or security, or money, or my spouse, or things—but God Himself! He would rather have a real relationship with God than anything the world can offer! The thing Jeremiah fears most is not the loss of applause or popularity; he doesn’t fear the disapproval of men; he’s not afraid of being unknown and unrecognized. What he fears most is worship without adoration, and religion without true commitment. What he fears most is getting what he wants through his own misguided desires — and missing what God wants!
