I opened up my mail and recognized the signature on this beautiful landscape in Arts South Dakota "Arts Alive". GPWS Member Barbara Sparks Watercolors "weathering the plains" is one of 10 new pieces added to the state's art collection in 2026 through the art for state buildings program.

🎨 Great Plains Watercolor Society Members-Only Meeting 🎨

Join us Thursday, October 8, from 6:30–8:00 PM for a special presentation, “Healing Through Art,” with Laura Koch!

Laura works as an Artist in Residence with Sanford Arts, alongside a rotating team of artists and musicians. They bring creative art experiences to patients throughout the hospital, including the Children’s Hospital, Cancer Center, dialysis, inpatient rehab, NICU, high-risk OB, and outpatient clinics.

Laura will share more about her work and how she interacts with patients, followed by a brief hands-on watercolor painting activity for members. Her primary mediums are watercolor and oil pastels, and her work focuses on helping patients experience reduced stress, accomplishment, mastery, control, and the joy of contributing artwork to the Cancer Center.

Brushes

Watercolors

A container for water

Paper and other supplies for the demonstration will be provided by Laura.

📍 Location: First Presbyterian Church
Choir Rehearsal Room — a different room than usual!

🚪 Enter through the door to the right (east) of the main entrance. Look for the door marked with a large “H.”

What a wonderful Great Plains Watercolor Society members’ meeting in Humboldt, SD!

We were delighted to learn from Bonnie Brahms as she shared her creative approach to combining pastel and watercolor techniques. Her demonstrations and insights gave us plenty of inspiration to take back to our own studios!

A fun little run-in during our Great Plains Watercolor Society plein air event in downtown Sioux Falls! 🎨💙

So great to connect with Arts South Dakota while we were out painting and enjoying a beautiful morning downtown. I always love the unexpected conversations and connections that happen when artists get together!

✨ A beautiful day of watercolor, creativity, and connection! ✨🎨

The Great Plains Watercolor Society recently gathered for our last plein air meetup of the season at Jacobson Plaza in downtown Sioux Falls. It was wonderful to see artists come together, paint outdoors, share ideas, and enjoy each other’s company.

A big thank-you to everyone who came out and made the meet-up such a fun and inspiring time. We love seeing the creativity and camaraderie within our watercolor community!

🌿 Thursday, September 10 — Plein Air Painting
📍 Jacobson Plaza, just north of the Levitt in downtown Sioux Falls

Our original location was Upper Sherman Park, but due to the Sanford Golf Tournament and potential parking challenges, we’re moving to Jacobson Plaza.

Bring your art supplies and take in the landscape while painting alongside fellow artists. Whether you’re new to plein air or experienced, this is a great chance to practice, share ideas, and create together!

🍁 Friday, September 11 — GPWS Members’ Only Fall Kick-Off Meeting

📍 Bonnie Brahm’s Studio

Bonnie Brahm has invited us to her studio for a morning to “Feel free to roam!” Sketch, paint, explore, and learn in her garden while enjoying some plein air time.

Then Bonnie will share a fun art technique using watercolor as the base with pastel as a garnish to finish your artwork. 🎨✨

Supply List:

Watercolor supplies — paints, brushes, paper towels, etc.
Watercolor paper
Pastels, only if you have them in your stash
Whether you’re looking for inspiration outdoors or ready to learn something new, it’s going to be a great week of creativity!
