⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

The Thunder Valley CDC (Community Development Corporation) in Pine Ridge welcomes individuals to experience the Lakota lifestyle and traditions. Their goal was to create a multigenerational playground that illustrates Lakota traditions and represent 7 sacred sites as play structures. In 2019, their AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant ensured the construction of ADA-accessible sidewalks leading to the entrance of the playground from the main parking lot and community center. In an effort to create space for all ages, they also purchased and installed seating areas for around the playground. These efforts allow playground attendants the chance to experience Lakota lifeways on many levels.

⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

South Dakota’s first mobile medical equipment lending library is hitting the streets! The The Legacy Foundation in Sioux Falls established “Owen’s Outfitters” to better serve older adults in more isolated, rural, and tribal communities. They partnered with health agencies and retirement communities to obtain donations of overstocked supplies and mobility equipment that could be borrowed for free and delivered to homes and reservations statewide, as well as serve the local unhoused population. After receiving a donated, wheel-chair accessible small bus to be the home of the lending library, they used their 2024 AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant to construct the interior to better store the equipment. This project prioritizes the health and well-being of South Dakotans and meets them where they’re at. These efforts make aging in place possible!🚌🏥

📢Every year, the Trustees Report provides an important snapshot of the long-term outlook for one of America’s most popular and important initiatives. This year’s report sends a clear message: Congress needs to act.

The latest projections show Social Security’s Trust Fund reserves are expected to be depleted by 2034. That means without Congressional action, Social Security will have about 80% of the money it needs to make full payments. Read more at the article linked below. ⬇️

⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

Before the Grand River Arts Council stepped in, the Palace Theater in Lemmon had no entryways that were accessible to all its visitors. With their 2024 AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant, the Arts Council created the “Palace Parklet,” a gathering space for arts-based programming, outside the theater. The parklet includes a ramp for accessibility to the theater and benches for older adults who use the downtown sidewalks for their daily outdoor walks. Since its opening, the parklet space has hosted monthly art events such as wool-spinning workshops and live music during town celebrations. The project serves as a moveable, reconfigurable, and livable site that encourages outdoor gathering and promotes creative, healthy living! 🎶🎨

⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

From a declining main street to a Veterans Memorial Park—the Roslyn Main Street Revitalization (Community Advancement for Roslyn and Eden) is a group of volunteers who appreciate honoring veterans while staying true to the area’s heritage. Their 2024 AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant was used to initiate the groundbreaking tasks of constructing ADA-accessible pathways, benches, and a gazebo for visitors to use around the park. Volunteers assisted in relocating memorial bricks from the original main street to use in the new design. The community is preserving its history while creating updated and inclusive spaces for public gatherings. The park includes a performance stage for local events, welcoming celebrations for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day events to honor past and present military personnel! 🇺🇸

⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

The Gettysburg-Whitlock Bay Development Corporation are cultivating connections with their community garden. The project allows gardeners to share their talents and produce with family, friends, and neighbors. Using their 2024 AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant, they purchased and installed accessible raised garden beds and organized workshops and evening events for gardeners to share their knowledge. Starting with an empty lot, they put down roots and grew an area that encourages conversations while gardening, supplies home-grown produce to community members, and teaches younger generations the tips and tricks of gardening work. 🍀🍅🥕

⭐From big ideas to better places!⭐

Teamwork makes the dream work in the Clear Lake community. 🤝 The Clear Lake, SD Healthy Hometown Community identified two concerns in the Clear Lake City Park: a lack of drinking water, and a lack of safe and accessible seating. In collaboration with Clear Lake Area Development Corporation, they combined their efforts to make the park a safer place for all ages who come to gather on the playground, near the pool, or at the baseball park. Using their 2023 AARP Livable Communities Community Challenge Grant, they purchased 2 ADA-compliant benches, with canopies, near the baseball park. To keep park attendees hydrated, they also installed a chilled water bottle filling station in the park. These improvements help make summer more fun, enjoyable, and safer for all generations! 🚰
