Hegseth wants credit for the military recruiting rebound. The reporting tells a different story.
When ABC News talked to nearly 40 recruits, most could not even name the Secretary of Defense. They are enlisting for the same reason working-class kids always have: steady pay, the GI Bill, and health care they cannot count on anywhere else. And the turnaround started before this administration took office.
This was never about loyalty to one man. It is what happens when an economy leaves young people few other ways to afford college or see a doctor than signing a military contract.
We took an oath to the Constitution, not to anyone's talking points. Real security means building a country where enlisting is a choice, not a last resort.
