Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, a time to honor the Tribal Nations who have cared for these lands since time immemorial and who continue that care today.

Across Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park Service Complex, and Olympic National Park, WNPF is honored to support projects that center Indigenous knowledge, including cultural training with neighboring Tribes, native plant learning with Lummi Nation School students, and Makah-led protection of culturally significant coastal sites.

In 2022, Ian Cox didn't return from a climb in North Cascades National Park. An Eagle Scout and Mountaineers instructor, Ian loved Washington's mountains and always asked his climbing partners, "Why are we safe?" As search and rescue teams worked day and night to find him, his friends saw firsthand how much these crews give to keep everyone safe in the backcountry.

To honor Ian's memory, they created the Dick's-A-Thon, a run to every Dick's Drive-In in Seattle inspired by an adventure Ian once took with his brother. Proceeds support the search and rescue teams who searched for Ian, plus The Mountaineers and Washington's National Park Fund, so Ian's question lives on in every safe trip home.

The black bears of Mount Rainier National Park, though? Totally prepared. This time of year they’re busy fueling up on berries before winter, so give them plenty of space to snack. Stay at least 100 yards away (about the length of a football field), never feed wildlife, and keep your food stored securely.
