The Alliance advances racial equity & educational justice for students in Seattle Public Schools. Public education is the cornerstone of democracy.

We’re on a mission to ensure every child in Seattle Public Schools is prepared for success in college, career and life. The Alliance for Education exists for the singular purpose of promoting excellence in public education in Seattle. We view Seattle Public Schools as essential to the health and vitality of our city. Our shared vision is of Seattle Public Schools as a high-performing, highly regarded urban school system, equipped to provide an excellent education to every student. Eliminating achievement gaps between student groups, which exist primarily along the lines of race, income, and ethnicity, is foundational to this vision. We believe our collective moral and economic responsibility is to ensure every child, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, zip code, or home circumstance, has the opportunity to succeed academically and to participate fully in the economic and cultural bounty of American life. We are dedicated to helping build and sustain a successful, innovative, joyful school system of which Seattleites can be proud. 4 students from this winter’s inaugural SPS Black Studies Conference we’re selected by artists from Columbia City Gallery Actualize AiR & ARTE NOIR to exhibit at this weekend’s (Oct 9-11) ACES (Artists of Color Expo & Symposium) in downtown Seattle!

Students were asked to create something — a painting, a photograph, a poem, an essay, a story — in the spirit of Sankofa. Sankofa is an Akan word to look back in order to know how best to move forward.

What does it mean to carry your history with you? What has been lost that deserves to be found? What does the past have to say to right now? What have you learned that you refuse to let disappear?

Students celebrated their cultures, countries and identities with artistic excellence and the power of storytelling across mediums.

You can see them in exhibit this weekend at the ACES symposium!

Did you know? Seattle Public Schools has an Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA) that was created in August 2019. The Office is an innovation center within SPS focused on cultivating the strengths of Black boys and teens.

Seattle Public Schools is the first district in Washington, and one of only a few across the nation, to create an office that intentionally cultivates the cultural and academic strengths of Black male students while simultaneously addressing their needs.

Alice and Char did their first round of visits to cohort 14 Seattle Teacher Residents placed at our South end schools! 🚙👩🏽‍🏫📚

They also got to surprise Dunlap Elementary (where STR alum Chelsea Adams-Fields is now Principal!) with a bounty of donated books! The books were provided from the Alliance's Classroom Resource Fund that brings culturally-responsive materials into students' hands.

Becoming a teacher wasn’t something Makena planned right away.

After graduating from Cornish College of the Arts, she was figuring out what came next and became a para educator at Seattle Public Schools in 2016. But a lot of what shaped her path started much earlier with her family. 🏡🏫

Today - Makena is a graduate of the Seattle Teacher Residency and works as an Extended Resource Teacher at Cleveland STEM High School in south Seattle.

☔️ Rain and ☀️ shine! Volunteers spent the morning at Nathan Hale High School in Lake City doing outdoor beautification projects!

This project tees up the student greenhouse club and horticulture class to be able to learn about and plant native species into spaces on campus.

Hale has a supportive alumni community, was an early adopted of SPS' Kingmakers and restorative justice programs, and offers many College in the High School (CiHS) courses.

Staff hope that amping up the curb appeal will attract neighbors and the nearby community to enroll their kids in SPS - if the outside of the building can reflect and better show all the learning that happens inside!

Last Saturday was Ready, Set, School! Volunteer Day at Dearborn Park International Elementary!

As a multilingual education school, they teach curriculum in English, Spanish and Mandarin! Meaning: there are 3x the workbooks, textbooks and supplies each year to unpack!

This mighty group of volunteers helped ready the school and donated enough school supplies for EVERY student to start the year off strong and not need to break the bank doing it.

Last Friday we organized a group of volunteers who spent an afternoon at Lowell Elementary preparing and beautifying the school for students to return back to school! 🏫🥰

Volunteers decorated bulletin boards, prepared family welcome packets, cleaned up outdoor trash and stocked family resource room shelves with OVER 2,000 donated items!!

Principal Chelsea shared with volunteers about the array of barriers students at Lowell experience that make the school a very special place and this afternoon of volunteering even more impactful.

If you didn't know: Lowell has a large attendance boundary that covers all of downtown and lots of Capitol Hill. The school community is comprised of many families facing housing and food insecurity in these expensive neighborhoods; diverse special ed and medically fragile programs for students; families that speak many languages and are empowered to bring their cultures with them; and travel pretty far to get to school each day.

Still: Students succeed because of the many Seattle Teacher Residency graduates who teach at Lowell, dedicated leaders like Principal Chelsea who galvanize resources to fill gaps, and a caring community that shows up over and over for Lowell students.

Thank you to all of the volunteers and organizations who support our schools! 💚
