At SJF, we've been renewing our commitment to showing up in the spaces and communities where our grantee partners organize, lead, and build power 🤲🏾

Recently, members of our team traveled to Spokane, WA, where we spent time with Manzanita House, Həłmxiłp Indigenous Birth Justice, and Mujeres In Action. These incredible organizations are advancing immigration justice, reproductive justice, and anti-violence work while strengthening their communities every day.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn from our grantee partners, deepen relationships, and witness firsthand the powerful work happening across our region. Every visit is a reminder that movements for justice are led by brilliant, resilient, and deeply committed community leaders.

Thank you to these organizations for welcoming us into your spaces and sharing your work with us 🖤

We had a beautiful time connecting with our grantee partners in Spokane, Washington. From anti-violence and immigration justice to LGBTQ+ organizing, our grantees are doing incredible frontline work—and are also just really great people to be in community with.

Sometimes building collective power looks like sharing delicious food from Indigenous Eats, enjoying each other’s company, and making space for laughter, joy, and connection together.

Deep gratitude to our co-host Pride Foundation and to everyone who joined us:

Who gets to decide which social justice movements deserve funding?

Right now, a handful of billion-dollar financial institutions hold enormous power over movement money.

Our latest blog breaks down how commercial donor-advised funds (DAFs) are reshaping philanthropy, why the freezing of grants to Southern Poverty Law Center matters, and why community-controlled funding is critical in politically dangerous moments.

Movements can't depend on Wall Street to protect justice work.

Read and share “Funding Power: Who Controls Movement Money?” below👇🏾 https://bit.ly/3R9fRj6

As the wealthy get wealthier, a handful of major financial institutions are gaining enormous and disproportionate power over which social justice movements get funding and which don’t. Following a recent widely criticized federal indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center by the Trump administr...

Three generations of women of color leadership in conversation ✨

Former Social Justice Fund Northwest (SJF) executive directors Mijo Lee and Bookda Gheisar visited our office to meet with current ED Valériana Chikoti-Bandua Estes. Together, they reflected on the history of our organization, the political moment we’re in, and what it means to build accountable philanthropy rooted in community and collective power.

In nearly 50 years, SJF has only had three women of color serve as executive director. It was inspiring to see so much knowledge, strategy, and lived experience at one table.

We're proud of where SJF has come from, and excited about we're going next.
