With great sadness, we share news about the passing of our beloved friend, Maureen Provost. Maureen and her husband Ken have been fierce advocates in the recovery community for many years through their work with RAIS, Grasp, and Healing Springs. Most recently, Maureen joined the Board of Directors for the Prevention Council.

Maureen’s kindness and thoughtfulness touched so many of us. From a simple act of sending a get well card to checking in on other parents who lost a child to an overdose, she was always thinking of others.

On Tuesday, October 20th, the Prevention Council hosted our Annual Student Leadership Conference with attendance of over 70 students from 11 districts to unite and brainstorm social media campaigns regarding social norming. Our keynote speaker, Sharon Trzaskos of Borgos Marketing, led the charge in educating students about marketing strategies that connect with our community's youth. We would like to not only thank Borgos Marketing & Events, Inc., NYS SADD Coordinator, Hannah West, and for providing tools for an engaging Red Ribbon Week.

SARATOGA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS PASS LAW PROHIBITING SALE AND DISTRIBUTION OF KRATOM PRODUCTS

BALLSTON SPA, NY — The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors passed legislation prohibiting the sale and distribution of kratom products within Saratoga County.

The local law was adopted on October 20, 2026, following a public hearing held October 14. The legislation establishes a countywide prohibition on the sale and distribution of kratom products, which are widely marketed as dietary or herbal supplements and sold at convenience stores.

The purpose of the Local Law is to protect public health, safety, and welfare by prohibiting the commercial sale and distribution of kratom products within Saratoga County.

Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman, Phil Barrett (Clifton Park) said, “We have seen the devastating impacts of kratom, which have tragically included local deaths, and we have heard from many of our county residents who support this measure. Clearly, more clinical research and ingredient labeling standards on kratom products are necessary to better inform people about the use of this product. By removing these products from easily accessible retail locations in Saratoga County, we’re taking an important step toward safeguarding our families and communities.”

This Local Law constitutes a prohibition on the commercial sale and distribution of kratom products, including natural, synthetic, semi-synthetic, chemically altered, or otherwise modified kratom derived products as defined herein, and shall apply to lawful natural kratom leaf products, including natural kratom leaf products in powder form, except for products that receive approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration after the effective date of this Local Law.

The law establishes fines of up to $1,000 for violations. Repeat violations within five years of a prior conviction may result in an additional fine of up to $1,500, imprisonment for up to one year or both.

The law was adopted as Introductory No. 6, Print No. 1 of 2026. The local law takes effect immediately upon filing with the New York State Secretary of State in accordance with state law.

Important information about a new substance known as Cychlorphine (synthetic opioid more powerful than Fentanyl). Cychlorphine does not react to nitazene test strips or Naloxone yet is being found in substances mixed with Fentanyl and/or Kratom.

Are you familiar with cychlorphine? It is a newer threat that is unfortunately gaining some traction as it has resulted in recent overdose deaths. Please educate yourself on what it looks like, and please ensure your narcan/overdose reversal medication (ORM) stock is up to date, as it does respond to narcan but it does require immediate response and may require multiple doses of narcan.
