The forum will address issues that are important to constituents in the 44th Senate District and voters will hear directly from the candidates. This event is open to the public. Please join the League of Women Voters’ brigade walking in the Flag Day parade. This year we are celebrating our League’s 60th Anniversary and the 250th birthday of the United States of America, we want this to be the largest League march ever!

Participants will assemble at 11:15 a.m. and the parade will begin at 12 noon along Broadway, through beautiful downtown Saratoga Springs, culminating at Congress Park. Please Join us!

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area has invited “Susan B. Anthony” to return to Cooperstown.

On this day in 1919, Congress approved the woman’s suffrage amendment and sent it to the states for ratification. Adding the amendment to the Constitution required ratification by three-fourths of the states, which at that time was 36 of 48.

The National Woman’s Party led by Alice Paul began sewing stars on a giant purple, white, and gold flag. Each time a state ratified the 19th Amendment, a new star would be sewn on the flag.

The 19th Amendment became law more than a year after Congress approved the amendment. The 36th state, Tennessee, voted to ratify on August 18, 1920. This image shows Alice Paul unfurling that flag from the suffrage headquarters on that day.
