Cell Metabolism | “Methionine-supplemented longevity diet increases growth hormone, GLP-1, and FGF21; reduces frailty; and promotes healthspan”

A new study, led by Maura Fanti and Valter Longo from USC, in collaboration with Harvard University and other institutions, found that, in animal models, a low-protein Longevity Diet inspired by traditional Mediterranean and Okinawan diets—mostly plant-based and containing low but sufficient amounts of methionine—reduced body fat and frailty while improving cardiometabolic markers.

An analysis of more than 200,000 adults also found that those with the highest animal-protein consumption had approximately twice the prevalence of type 2 diabetes compared with those with the lowest intake.

The findings suggest that healthy aging may depend not only on protein quantity but also on amino acid composition. Human clinical trials are still needed.

Looking for an easy, colorful lunch to pack for back to school?

Pasta Primavera is a great back-to-school recipe because it comes together in about 20 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights, and kids can help toss the pasta, which makes them more excited to eat their veggies.

The zucchini and red bell pepper add fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants to support growing kids' immune systems. It's also easy to adapt: swap in whole-wheat or chickpea pasta for extra fiber and protein, or toss in whatever vegetables you have on hand.

This easy, no-cook salad by Shayna Feinerman, MS RDN, is as nourishing as it is refreshing.

Chickpeas provide plant-based protein and fiber that support steady energy, healthy digestion, and balanced blood sugar, while extra-virgin olive oil adds heart-healthy fats and anti-inflammatory polyphenols.

Cucumber and tomatoes bring hydration and antioxidants like lycopene and vitamin C, and fresh parsley offers an extra dose of vitamins and plant compounds.

Together, it's a light but satisfying dish that fits beautifully into a mostly plant-based, Longevity Diet–inspired way of eating, ready in about 10 minutes.

Protecting your skin starts with sunscreen, shade, and protective clothing, but nutrition can also play a supportive role.

Foods rich in carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, and polyphenols may help support the skin’s resilience against oxidative stress caused by UV exposure. While they do not replace sunscreen, they can complement daily sun protection habits as part of a balanced, mostly plant-based dietary pattern.

Discover our simple nutrition tips to help support your skin from the inside out during the summer.
