This year, as America celebrates its historic 250th anniversary of independence, I'm reminded of what makes this country so truly special.

America was built on a beautiful idea: our rights don't come from government they come from G-d. Freedom isn't just a privilege to enjoy; it's a gift from our Creator, and with every gift comes a responsibility to do good.

This connects beautifully to this week's Torah reading. The Torah teaches us that real freedom isn't simply doing whatever we want. True freedom is the ability to choose what is right, even when it's not the easiest path. Pinchas (in this week's reading) wasn't driven by public opinion or by the pressures of those around him. He simply did what G-D expected of him.

We all face those choices every day. It might mean taking two minutes to put on tefillin before rushing out the door, pausing to light Shabbat candles before the weekend begins, choosing a kind word instead of a sharp reaction, or giving a little money to charity. Those seemingly small choices remind us that our lives are guided by something higher than convenience or circumstance.

Living in a country that protects our freedom is an extraordinary blessing. The best way we can say "thank you" is by using that freedom to bring more mitzvos, more kindness, and more light into the world.
