At last week's Inaugural State of Nonprofits in Santa Barbara County, we presented the Social Impact Spotlight recognition to two leaders whose work has helped create the conditions for nonprofits in our region to lead, serve, and thrive.

Eder Gaona-Macedo, Executive Director of The Fund for Santa Barbara, has long championed community voice, grassroots leadership, and social change — investing in the vision of those closest to the challenges and working toward a more just and equitable Santa Barbara County.

Janet Garufis, Chairman & CEO of Montecito Bank & Trust, has demonstrated a deep and enduring commitment to this region through philanthropy, partnership, and civic leadership — reflecting a belief that strong communities require strong local institutions.

One of the highlights of last week's Inaugural State of Nonprofits in Santa Barbara County was hearing directly from nonprofit leaders.

Thank you to our panelists — Ashley Costa (LVCHO), Beth Skidmore (Rooted Santa Barbara), Kai Tepper (Children's Creative Project), and Steve Windhager (Santa Barbara Botanic Garden) — for bringing the report's themes to life with candor and insight.

They spoke honestly about what it takes to collaborate across sectors, the real costs of delivering services in a high cost-of-living county, the growing role of volunteers, and the direct impact of federal policy changes on the communities they serve.
