Unite To Light

Unite To Light Unite to Light believes that access to clean and affordable light and energy are critical to improving health, education and prosperity.

As a not-for-profit 501(c)3 we manufacture and distribute efficient, durable, low cost solar lamps and solar power. We are a group of volunteers, donors, and one full time employee based in the Santa Barbara, California, area. We have designed and produce and distribute a high-quality, low-cost, solar powered light. Through distribution partners throughout the world, we put lights into the hands o

f individuals and families in developing countries. Program overhead is low. Office equipment and support facilities and related professional services (CPA, legal, web hosting, and the like) are donated. Distribution is through partners in the local areas which are well established and highly respected. Our typical distribution partner is another 501(c)(3) entity, an international church organization, a school or orphanage, or a local entrepreneur or philanthropist using our lights as part of an overall program to improve the quality of life in whole villages or regions. Increasingly, lights are being sold at a reasonable markup by individual women, women-owned businesses, or women-run organizations. In developing nations, when women can generate income and assets of their own, their stature increases, they become less vulnerable, and the whole family benefits. By making special efforts to distribute lights through methods which benefit women and children, not only are the benefits of the light itself brought to people, the process of distribution creates further benefits.

Honored to partner with Backpacks For The Street and provide Kenneth with a small tool to help him to connect to services and people that he needs right now.

Life has not been kind to Kenneth lately.

After losing his job, Kenneth suffered another devastating loss — his wife passed away. Since then, he’s been struggling with homelessness while trying to hold onto his sobriety through unimaginable grief and hardship.

Like so many people on the streets, Kenneth has been staying in shelters that often feel anything but safe. He shared how difficult it is to stay sober in an environment filled with drug use, chaos, noise, and unsafe conditions. Imagine trying to heal while surrounded by the very things you’re fighting to escape.

Today, we were able to provide Kenneth with food, a battery pack (Unite To Light), a sleeping bag (The Sleeping Bag Project New York City) , and resources for support — but more importantly, we listened. We saw him. We reminded him that he is not forgotten.

This is only the beginning.

Our Backpacks For The Street team will now be working closely with Kenneth to help him find safer shelter that supports — not jeopardizes — his sobriety. We’ll also help connect him with an outpatient program, grief support, and the services he needs to begin rebuilding his life one step at a time.

Homelessness is not always about poor choices. Sometimes it’s grief. Sometimes it’s loss. Sometimes life breaks someone down faster than they can recover alone.

Please keep Kenneth in your thoughts tonight.

And please remember — compassion can change the direction of someone’s life.

Reliable electricity is essential to women’s health.

In our latest article for The Santa Barbara Independent, Sara Rossi of Direct Relief and our own Megan Birney Rudert team up to explore how access to dependable power impacts maternal care, emergency response, vaccine storage, and healthcare access worldwide.

We’ve seen firsthand how light and power can improve safety, strengthen healthcare delivery, and support women and families in vulnerable communities around the globe.
