Our Mission Statement:

To promote responsible pet ownership through humane education, and to provide shelter and care to domestic companion animals until a loving, responsible home can be found, or lost pets are reunited with their guardians. At Carolina Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) we are dedicated to finding permanent and loving families for the homeless dogs and cats of North Carolina. CARA began rescuing homeless animals from across N.C. in April 2003, and we have placed countless animals in wonderful homes across the country. CARA is dedicated to providing the best service possible to the animals in our care and the families who adopt from us. We take pride in adopting healthy animals and go to great lengths to pair each pet with the perfect family. CARA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer organization that operates on individual and corporate donations and fundraising proceeds. We do not receive any funding from government agencies or national animal welfare agencies. We are very fortunate to have a caring and dedicated team of volunteers, board members, and supporters. We are a legitimate animal rescue that only adopts out healthy animals and is fully licensed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

How on earth is Mr. Smee still looking for a home? There is not a person at CARA that isn’t obsessed with him… he’s pretty dang perfect. 🥰

Smee is a giant goofball who loves everyone. He’s playful and beyond sweet. One of the funniest things about him is that he is a bit of a thief…
He will prance around until he finds something to steal from somebody. Normally a shoe but he truly doesn’t have a preference. It’s naughty but also charming. You can avoid this by making sure that he has plenty of toys.

Smee does not like being alone. He does have some separation anxiety. He would do best in a home where someone is there often. He’s just a big softie. ❤️

Smee is:
•A Bassett hound/Pitbull mix
•4 years old
•Much smaller than he looks
•Good with dogs
•Good with kids
•Neutered
•UTD on vaccines
•Microchipped

We cannot believe it but thanks to our incredible supporters, we are halfway to our goal! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. You have no idea how much it means to us. 🙏❤

After years of muddy paws, daily cleaning, countless animals, a few tears and a whole lot of happy endings, our shelter is showing its age. Now it’s time to give the building that has cared for so many animals a little TLC of its own.

Taking care of this building means making sure CARA can continue to be here for the animals and the community that depend on us.

Right now, every dollar donated can make twice the impact.

Thanks to a generous matching gift from the Ruby and Ernest McSwain Worthy Lands Trust, every dollar donated to our campaign will be matched, dollar for dollar, until we’ve unlocked the full $25,000 match.

$25 becomes $50.
$50 becomes $100.
$100 becomes $200.

We hope you’ll consider being part of CARA’s next chapter. Every donation brings us closer to completing these much-needed repairs, and every share helps us reach someone new.

Matching funds are limited and available only until the full $25,000 match is claimed. Donate today and help us unlock every dollar.

Poor Teddy Graham has been with us since he was the squishiest little puppy in the world. When we pulled his mom, his sister, and him from the Harnett County Animal Shelter, we thought for sure that he would be scooped up right away. Unfortunately, that is not how Teddy’s story has gone. He has been with us for 5+ long months. 😭

Teddy is such a good guy. He loves people so much and is a champ at playing fetch. He is good with dogs as well.

This 7 month old boy is a mixed breed of some sort. We never truly know with rescue pups. He is UTD on vaccines, Microchipped, and neutered. 🧸

We would love to find Teddy a home before the holiday’s so that he does not have to spend his very first Christmas in his kennel. This is our biggest wish this year! 🎁

Please, if you can find it in your heart to open your home up to the sweetest boy, apply for him today.

Meet Tony Tony Chopper! 🩵🩷

This sweet kitten came to us as a stray. We are so grateful to the Good Samaritan who brought him to us. He was absolutely covered in fleas and was a bit lethargic. He’s feeling better now though which makes us so happy! His stray hold is now up which means we can start accepting applications for him.

Tony is UTD on vaccines and microchipped. He is good with cats and kids. 🐈‍⬛

He has been an absolute doll since arriving here. We cannot wait to get to know him even more and find him the most perfect home.

Andy’s beautiful, shiny coat is not something that he takes for granted. Not too long ago, he was missing a ton of hair and he had sores all over his body. He is glowing now and he knows it! 😉☀️

Andy is now healthy and ready to go home!
He is neutered, UTD on vaccines, and microchipped.
He is good with dogs and kids!

Andy is a year old and just shy of 40 lbs. He is the sweetest guy. He loves attention and would do anything for treats. 🤍

Apply for him on our website, if interested in adding him to your family.

You can find us at 42 Deep River Rd, Sanford, NC 27330, Wednesday-Friday 3-7 PM and on Saturday’s 10 AM-2 PM!

Hey there. 👋🏻
My name is Stanley Steamer and I’m here to tell you a bit about myself in case you are possibly my future owner? Wouldn’t that be great?! I think so!

I’m a pretty cool guy. My friends at CARA found me at the Lee County Animal Shelter where I was shut down and terrified. When I got to CARA, I became a giant ball of energy. Did I trick them? That’s a secret I’ll never tell. 😉

An active owner would be best for me because I love to run and play. I am working on not jumping so my owner would also need to help me learn more manners. What can I say? I’m just a young, rambunctious, lad.

I am a very sweet boy though. I do calm down and demand pets once I’ve gotten my energy out. It’s just tough living in a kennel full time. I’m a guy who really enjoys stretching his legs. 🙂

I am an 8 month old Terrier mix. I like other dogs but I am not yet cat tested. I’m fully vetted and ready to go! Apply for me today.

You can find us at 42 Deep River Rd, Sanford, NC 27330, Wednesday-Friday 3-7 PM and on Saturday’s 10 AM-2 PM!

Meet the Halloween candy kittens! Who doesn’t love Halloween candy?! 🍫

We pulled these sweet babies from the Lee County Animal Shelter and we are obsessed with their squishy little faces.

First up, we have Butterfinger. A sweet buff colored boy. 💛

Then we have Twix. Another Buff colored boy. ❤️

Next is Milky Way. A super handsome tabby. 🤎

And last but certainly not least… we have the only female, Almond Joy. A gorgeous gray kitten. 💙

These sweethearts are about 8 weeks old and ready for loving homes. They are UTD on vaccines and microchipped. They are good with other cats, good with kids, and assumed to warm up to dogs quickly. They’d all be a great addition to your family!
