Storytelling Series📖
Racing is deeply woven into North Carolina’s history and culture, earning the state a reputation as the heart of NASCAR. Many of the sport’s greatest drivers got their start in North Carolina, while Charlotte remains the center of the NASCAR industry with numerous race teams and support businesses based there. Major racing events attract thousands of visitors each year, boosting local economies and supporting jobs in tourism, engineering, and manufacturing. More than just a sport, racing is a proud tradition that continues to be an important part of North Carolina’s heritage and identity.
Herb Thomas was one of the most successful and influential NASCAR drivers of the 1950s. Born in 1923 in Olivia, North Carolina, he joined NASCAR during its first season in 1949 and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled competitor. His career took off after earning his first NASCAR victory at Martinsville Speedway in 1950. The following year, Thomas began driving the Hudson Hornet, a car that helped propel him to national recognition. In 1951, he won the prestigious Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway and secured the NASCAR Grand National Championship, cementing his place among the sport’s early stars.
Thomas continued to dominate stock car racing throughout the decade. He captured a second championship in 1953, becoming NASCAR’s first driver to win two titles, and recorded 12 race victories in both 1953 and 1954. Over his career, he earned 48 NASCAR wins and established himself as one of the most consistent drivers of his era. He was also the first driver to win Darlington’s Southern 500 three times. A serious crash in 1956 brought his racing career to an end, but his contributions to the sport left a lasting legacy. Today, Thomas is recognized as a NASCAR pioneer whose success helped popularize stock car racing across the country, and he was honored with induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013 and named one of NASCAR's all-time top-50 drivers. He was also part of the inspiration behind the Cars movie character Doc Hudson. When his days on the racetrack came to an end, Herb returned home to Sanford, where he raised his family and spent the rest of his life working as a farmer and trucker. Following his passing in 2000, his contributions to both racing and our community continue to be remembered. Today, we celebrate that legacy with a mural featuring Herb and the famed “Fabulous Hudson Hornet.”
