Stay safe & Happy 4th of July!!

Dear Neighbors, Let's all keep our community safe this holiday. We've seen far too many fires in our area over the last few years. The following are the key messages being sent throughout the city from SJPD and SJFD:

• All types of fireworks, even those labeled 'safe and sane,' are illegal in San José and most of Santa Clara County.
• Residents can report illegal fireworks activity online at www.sanjoseca.gov/fireworks, through the San José 311 app, or by calling 408-535-5600 or 3-1-1.
• If you can safely take photos or video of fireworks being used on private property, please include them with your report. Only reports with visual evidence are actionable. Video evidence is preferred to photos.
• Fine amounts for those caught discharging illegal fireworks begin at $1,000 for a first violation; increase to $2,000 for a second violation (within 18 months of the previous violation); and $3,000 for a third violation (within 18 months of the previous violation).
• Possession of dangerous illegal fireworks may result in a fine of up to $100,000 plus jail time, depending on the quantity.
• Under San José’s Social Host Ordinance, property owners and individuals hosting a gathering where illegal fireworks are used will be held liable for emergency response costs resulting from the use of illegal fireworks.
• It is also illegal to be a spectator at unpermitted fireworks displays. Any individual knowingly attending an unpermitted fireworks exhibition is subject to a fine (10.17.105).
• In 2025, the City of San José began using drones to detect and document illegal fireworks activity. Violators who are caught on video, may face fines and/or prosecution.
• A free community event and drone show is occurring on the Fourth of July at Lake Cunningham Park, courtesy of District 8. Additionally, the San Jose Giants are putting on Independence Day fireworks shows following their games on July 3 and July 4. Please note, the San Jose Giants’ fireworks shows require a ticket to the game.

Have a safe and happy 4th! 🎉
