Our mission is to ensure every family in San Jose has the fundamental building blocks to create mobility from poverty. Our volunteers, community partners, donors and supporters help underserved families obtain the basic necessities to survive and acquire the life skills to thrive. We provide programs for underserved families to acquire healthy food and build life skills on financial stability, car

Meet the Voices Shaping the Inside Poverty Conversation

Join us for Inside Poverty, the opening panel of the 2026 Inside Poverty & Silicon Valley Kindness Awards, featuring three local leaders bringing distinct perspectives on leadership, health equity, and community development:

LaVonda Baldwin: Executive Coach and former U.S. diplomat, bringing more than a decade of leadership experience in complex, high-stakes environments.

Darcie Green: Executive Director of Latinas Contra Cancer, bringing an important perspective on health equity, opportunity, and the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Zelica Rodriguez-Deams: Director of Thriving Communities at Sobrato Philanthropies, leading place-based strategies that bring people, organizations, and resources together around locally identified priorities.

What If the Next Great Innovation Is Community Voice?
Silicon Valley has built its reputation by reimagining what’s possible. Yet one of our greatest opportunities for innovation may have nothing to do with technology.

Too often, the people nonprofits serve are treated as participants rather than partners. But families living through poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, and other challenges possess knowledge and expertise that no outside consultant or organization can fully replicate.

A Backpack Can Mean More Than You Think

Back-to-school season should be a time of excitement—new teachers, new friends, fresh supplies, and the possibilities of a new school year. But for families living on limited incomes, preparing for school can bring significant financial pressure.

Nationally, parents expect to spend an average of $885 per child on back-to-school purchases this year, including clothing, technology, books, school supplies, and other school-related expenses. School supplies alone are expected to cost about $118 per student, an increase of approximately 8% from last year. (Source: Groundwork Collaborative, groundworkcollaborative.org)

In the Bay Area, where the cost of living is among the highest in the country, these expenses can add to already difficult household decisions. Nearly half of Bay Area parents and guardians say they cannot consistently afford their monthly expenses while also putting money aside.

At Sunday Friends, we see the reality behind these numbers. A backpack and school supplies may seem simple, but for a family balancing rent, food, and other necessities, they can make a meaningful difference. Last year through our annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive, Sunday Friends provided 300 backpacks filled with school supplies, along with 200 additional backpacks, helping ensure school-age children ages 5–18 had the essentials they needed to start the school year.

A backpack alone won't solve the challenges families face, but it can ease some financial pressure and help a child walk into the classroom feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn. Through the generosity of our co , Sunday Friends is helping families begin the school year with one less burden—and one more reason to feel hopeful about what lies ahead.

INSIDE POVERTY

Our morning begins with an immersive experience that invites participants to see poverty through the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of community members.
Through interactive activities and conversation, we’ll explore the realities families face—from housing and employment to food security, healthcare, and access to essential resources. We’ll also hear from international speakers who will bring global perspectives and new approaches to strengthening families and communities.

Most importantly, Inside Poverty asks us to listen differently—to recognize the experience, knowledge, resilience, and strengths that families bring to the challenges they face.

Sunday Friends Local Hubs: Places to Connect, Learn and Grow

Over the past few years, moments like this performance by Raíces Vivas Folklórico have connected us with incredible community members, parents, children, and local entrepreneurs and creators—people who bring their talents, ideas, and energy to their neighborhoods.

This week’s photo features Raíces Vivas Folklórico performing at El Mercado at San Ysidro in Gilroy. It’s a wonderful example of how a neighborhood space can bring people together to celebrate culture, build relationships, share skills, and discover new opportunities.

For us, this is about more than dance. El Mercado at San Ysidro is an example of the kind of “local hub” we want to help strengthen in neighborhoods, places where families can connect with resources, learn new skills, meet their neighbors, and find opportunities to move forward.

These experiences are helping shape our vision for Sunday Friends Local Hubs—welcoming, neighborhood-based spaces where families can access support, build skills, connect with one another, and work together on ideas that make their community stronger.

The San Ysidro neighborhood in Gilroy is an important part of this vision. By building on places and partnerships that already exist, we can bring more learning, family resources, youth activities, entrepreneurship, and other opportunities closer to home.

A bicycle can change so much more than the way a child gets around; it's a gateway to confidence, adventure, and belonging.

This young girl just chose her very own bicycle at Sunday Friends’ quarterly Bike Shop, made possible through our partnership with Silicon Valley Bike Exchange. After carefully picking the perfect bike, she took her first ride right in the Sobrato Center for Nonprofits’ parking lot, with her mom cheering her on.

For many families, essentials like bikes, school supplies, and fresh food are sometimes out of reach. But with Sunday Friends, children head into summer with new ways to stay active, explore their neighborhoods, and enjoy the outdoors.

Here's how you can help: If you or someone you know has bicycles, small household items, or other gently used items sitting unused, please consider donating them to our upcoming DBM Repurposed Hub donation drive.
