Kindness in Action: Bringing Wellness to Families

Acupuncturists from the M & H Foundation regularly join our community to provide free wellness services to our families. A special thank you to the providers who generously share their expertise with our community: Dr. Hao Liu, Dr. Emma Hsieh, Dr. Ya Ping Chiu, and Dr. Nicole Lee. Their commitment helps remove barriers to care, making wellness services accessible to families who might otherwise go without.

If you have a skill, service, resource, or idea that could benefit local families, we would love to hear from you. Your contribution can help create opportunities and make a difference in someone's life. Sunday Friends is a "We" organization where our community grows stronger when we work together.

Thank you from all our families!

Handmade with Love, Received with Gratitude

For many families, a warm hat, scarf, or blanket is more than a comfort, it is a reminder that someone cares. As families work hard to build stability, provide for their children, and navigate daily challenges, small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.

A special thank you to the volunteers of Knitzvah, part of Jewish Silicon Valley, for sharing their creativity and generosity with our families. These thoughtful gifts remind families that they are seen, valued, and supported. Every handcrafted hat, scarf, and blanket represents more than yarn and needles. It is a tangible expression of kindness and human connection.

Thank you from all of our families!

If you, your club, congregation, workplace, or community group have items, services, or projects you would like to donate, we would love to hear from you. Together, we can help ensure that families feel supported, encouraged, and connected to a caring community.

Children’s Art Activities at Community Days

Nearly 200 Sunday Friends members participate in Children’s Art Activities during Community Days, where art becomes more than painting. It becomes a space for families to connect, share ideas, laugh together, and simply enjoy time with one another.

“For a few hours, we are not thinking about problems, we are just together as a family,” shared one parent.

In this photo, a volunteer helped a young participant place his colorful handprint on a birthday poster filled with love, creativity, and community connection.

At Sunday Friends, we believe families already carry the creativity, strength, and work ethic needed to move forward. When people have access to support and opportunity, they can build better futures for their families.

From Food Distribution to Family Tables: Building Healthy Habits Together

At Sunday Friends Community Day, families gathered for a special no-heat cooking class. More than simply preparing healthy snacks and recipes, the activity focused on building confidence in the kitchen and helping families learn practical ways to use the fresh produce provided through our weekly food distribution program.

One important goal of these cooking activities is introducing fruits and vegetables that may not always be culturally familiar to the families we serve. By creating a welcoming space to explore new ingredients together, families can learn simple preparation techniques, practice knife safety, and discover healthy meals they can recreate at home. These shared experiences help ensure that nutritious food is not only distributed, but fully understood, appreciated, and enjoyed.

A heartfelt thank you to volunteers from the National Charity League, Inc. Orchard Valley Chapter for sharing your time, care, and kitchen know-how with our families!

RISE Youth Leaders Build Community through Outreach and Leadership

Sunday Friends’ RISE Youth Leadership Program participated in a community event, where youth leaders connected with families, shared resources, and celebrated community together.

RISE participants hosted the Sunday Friends booth at the Picnic by the Lake: A Multicultural Festival and Legislative Resource Fair hosted by California State Senator Dave Cortese. Throughout the day, they engaged with District 15 residents, shared information about youth leadership and prevention, and even had the opportunity to meet Senator Cortese and take a group photo together. Thank you to Senator Cortese and his team for creating such a welcoming event for families and community organizations.

“Without the Sunday Friends RISE program, I never would have had the opportunity to attend a community event like this. It was so inspiring!”
—RISE Youth Leader

Through RISE, young people gain confidence, leadership skills, and opportunities to make a positive difference in their communities. RISE leaders are trained to help educate youth and families about a variety of health topics ranging from drug use prevention to environmental conservation, encouraging healthier futures for San José youth and families.

A Bright Spot: The Power of Community Entrepreneurship

In uncertain times, moments of hope matter. At Sunday Friends, we see everyday that families already carry the creativity, knowledge, and entrepreneurial spirit they need. They just need a chance to bring it to life. Our work is at the intersection of opportunity and hope.

At our Valley Palms neighborhood program, we created opportunity through Mercado—a lively community marketplace where neighbors became vendors, home cooks became entrepreneurs, and ideas stepped into the real world.

Families asked an honest question: How do we know if our ideas will work? So we made a space to help them find out. Participants received $100 to purchase supplies, test their products, and offer samples to the community.

One parent stood behind a table of homemade goods, watching as neighbors stopped, tasted, and bought. Later, they shared, “This opportunity gave me the encouragement I needed to move forward with my business.” That’s what Mercado is all about. It’s not just selling—it’s trying, learning, and growing.

Participants are invited to take the next step by applying to our Dream, Build, Mentor (DBM) entrepreneurship program—a pathway toward economic stability and independence.

At Sunday Friends, we believe that when barriers are removed and people are supported, opportunity doesn’t just grow. It spreads!
