What did our community discover during this year's SDBA South Bay BioBlitz?

Over two months, community scientists explored wetlands, bays, and open spaces across South Bay, documenting the incredible biodiversity that calls our region home. Every observation helps us better understand and protect these important ecosystems.

Join us on July 16 at UC San Diego Kendall-Frost Marsh Field Station for WONDERS OF THE WETLANDS.

Dr. Melissa Liotta, a Fish Biologist with NOAA Fisheries at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, will share the results of her ongoing community-based fish monitoring program at Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve.

For the past several years, Dr. Liotta has led fish seining efforts at KFM, engaging volunteers to collect valuable data that help scientists better understand the fish communities that depend on this important wetland habitat.

Fireworks don't end when the show is over. This holiday weekend, we're asking for your help documenting the impacts of fireworks on our local wetlands, beaches, and wildlife.

ReWild Mission Bay is partnering with San Diego Bird Alliance and San Diego Coastkeeper to collect community observations of fireworks debris and injured or deceased wildlife—especially seabirds—along the Mission Bay coastline and the San Diego River Mouth.

-Survey dates: July 2–6
-Survey area: Mission Bay coastline & San Diego River Mouth

It's easy: walk, observe, and submit what you see using your phone.

Every observation helps us better understand how fireworks affect coastal habitats and provides valuable community science data to inform local decision-makers.

**Your safety comes first. Please do not handle hazardous materials or injured wildlife. If you're unsure, document the observation from a safe distance.**

Plastic pollution continues to impact our wetlands, waterways, and wildlife. A new report from San Diego Coastkeeper and partners found that plastic fragments were the most common type of debris collected during community cleanups across San Diego County in 2025.

At ReWild Mission Bay, we're committed to restoring healthy wetlands for people and wildlife, and reducing plastic pollution is an important part of that work.

It's official. For the first time in the history of the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund, the City of San Diego is directing the majority of it to what voters prioritized: wetland restoration and water quality. The FY2027 budget is adopted, and projects like De Anza Natural, Tecolote Creek, Cudahy Creek, and North Fiesta Island are moving forward. San Diego Bird Alliance is proud to have been part of the coalition that made this happen.
