The bats in this photo are soaring over the San Diego River in Mission Valley. These remarkable creatures are an important part of our local ecosystem, and your support can help protect them.

Thank you to the 171 volunteers who worked to make the San Diego River ecosystem more climate resilient during San Diego Climate Week!

Our largest Climate Action Day event mobilized 88 San Diego River Mouth Habitat Restoration volunteers, in partnership with Surfrider Foundation San Diego, to plant 80 native plants, collect, clean, and package California native seed for our seed library, and hand-pull European sea lavender from the salt marsh. These community efforts help to decrease risk of erosion, create a healthier habitat for endangered birds, and support a more resilient estuary ecosystem.

This community Climate Action Day was hosted in partnership with California Climate Action Corps, a program of California Volunteers, Office of the Governor.

And a special thank you to OB People's Food Co-op for donating snacks! Together, we are making a real difference!

Thank you to our Friends of the Bats and Adopt-A-Bat supporters who joined us at Grant Park for a Halloween-themed Bat Walk last weekend! 🦇
We spotted five bat species along the river and learned about the watershed’s creepy-crawly critters from Francisco Bassos. An orb-weaver spider was even released!

We were honored to receive a certificate of recognition from the office of Mayor Todd Gloria for our continued service to San Diego’s communities in honor of National Cleanup Day. This special event, during Coastal Cleanup Day with I Love A Clean San Diego, was a wonderful day of impact for the river!

Thank you to our partners and Mayor Todd Gloria’s office for this recognition and their continued support.

CARE KIT SUPPLIES NEEDED: After forecasts on Friday showed the San Diego River in Mission Valley was going to rise more than 5 1/2 ft. in just a few hours, our River Assessment Field Team interns, and partners People Assisting the Homeless - PATH and the City of San Diego, posted flood warning signs to warn the 195 people living unhoused in the riverbed of the life-threatening dangers of the flood waters. They also handed out care kits with urgent hygiene items, socks, water, and snacks.

With the predicted El Niño storms this fall and winter, care kit supplies are needed more than ever. We especially need toothbrushes, sanitation wipes, and granola bars.

The San Diego River Watershed is home to at least 16 of the 22 bat species in San Diego County and they are important indicator species in the ecosystem. But bats are under threat from habitat loss, climate change, and more,
