Ready to launch a career in emergency medical services or firefighting?

Our partners at San Diego EMS Corps are recruiting for Cohort 4, starting January 2027!

This five-month program prepares young adults for careers in emergency services through hands-on EMT training, ride-alongs, mentorship, career readiness support and more. Participants can also earn a $1,500 monthly stipend while completing the program.

San Diego’s job market continues to grow, but not every industry is seeing the same gains.

In August, San Diego County added 2,400 jobs, bringing total employment to nearly 1.5 million. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.9%, with education and health services leading job growth while construction experienced declines.

Beyond the numbers, new state legislation is expanding youth apprenticeships, strengthening work-based learning opportunities and increasing transparency around layoffs related to AI.

Meet Nicole, one of the original members of our Youth Advisory Board, who joined while still in high school and unsure of her future path.

Through her involvement with the board, Nicole found her voice, developed confidence and leadership skills and explored new career possibilities. Now a biology student at UC San Diego / UCSD, she is working toward her goal of becoming a physician assistant while helping other young people discover opportunities of their own.

Recently honored with the Youth Advisory Board’s STAR Award for her leadership and service, Nicole’s journey is a reminder that you don’t have to have your future figured out to start making an impact.

This week, we celebrated the achievements of more than 44 participants who successfully completed the 80-hour Peer Support Specialist Initial Training. This milestone marks the completion of the program’s first phase. Participants will now move into the next phase, which includes career readiness training, professional development opportunities, internship placement support and employment services designed to help them enter and thrive in the behavioral health workforce.

This initiative is made possible through our partnership with NAMI San Diego. We were honored to have members of the NAMI team join us in recognizing participants’ accomplishments and presenting certificates. Special thanks to Anna Maker and Ollin Stowers for attending in person, and to Brianna Castro for joining virtually to celebrate this important milestone with our participants.
