Back-to-school is a good time to check in on more than just homework and new routines.

After the first few weeks of school, take a moment to ask your child how their vision feels and check in with their teacher.

Are they having trouble seeing the board?
Are reading or close-up activities uncomfortable?
Have they mentioned headaches, tired eyes, or screen fatigue?
Has their teacher noticed any changes?

These small conversations can help parents recognize when it may be worth talking with an eye-care professional.

For children and families facing vision loss, progress can begin with hope.

In this conversation, we hear about an extraordinary breakthrough for Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a rare inherited eye disease. Gene therapy has given some people with certain forms of LCA the opportunity to experience meaningful improvements in vision.

The message is powerful: when we continue investing in vision research, innovation, and the next generation of treatments, we move closer to a future where fewer children have to hear that “nothing can be done.”

July is UV Awareness Month! A reminder that protecting your eyes is just as important as protecting your skin.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause damage to your eyes over time, making everyday habits like wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat an important part of lifelong eye health.

For children living with rare genetic vision disorders, protecting their vision is especially important. While sunglasses can’t prevent or treat these conditions, they can help shield eyes from harmful UV exposure and support overall eye health.

This month, take a few simple steps to care for your family’s vision:
🕶️ Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
👒 Add a hat for extra protection.
☀️ Make eye protection part of your everyday routine, even on cloudy days.
