Rufus’s Rescue Dogs is a small home based dog and cat rescue located in central Louisiana. Our main intake group are smaller breed groups but we always open our doors to any dog in need of assistance- we truly help all kinds of kind. Our other primary focus is our senior and/or hospice dogs that require experienced adopters, or that are not adoptable due to their age, health, special needs or ongo
ing medical care. Many of the dogs we help have been neglected physically, medically, and emotionally; sometimes they come from backyard breeders or puppy mill type set ups. Other dogs are surrendered to us by their owners who can no longer care for them or no longer want them for a plethora of different reasons. We also partner closely with our local shelters and other rescues to take in dogs and cats that would otherwise be euthanized. After all, these little ones have been through they deserve a chance to experience life in their remaining days knowing they are loved, cared for, have full bellies and live a life free from pain and filth. Both our adoptable and hospice dogs remain in our home living side by side, they experience the freedoms of life just like any regular pet would. Our adoptable dogs work to become fully vetted which includes spay or neuter surgeries, full vaccination status, heartworm testing, heartworm preventative, flea and tick preventative and microchips, as well as any additional grooming need. Our unadoptable and hospice pups remain in our sanctuary based home care where they spend their remaining days being cared for and loved while we provide for their ongoing veterinary care, medications, supplements, food, continence care (diapers, belly bands, p*e pads), grooming and aid in mobility needs. Our adoptable dogs learn from their surroundings all while experiencing new things that encompass home life, in addition to working on house training and crate training in order to be well rounded family pets. We work tirelessly to ensure that our dogs find the appropriate match for their forever families where they can be loved but also thrive in their new homes. We do adoptions all over the country and arrange transport to new homes. Over 75% of our adoptions are considered long distance adoptions where dogs are matched with new families and we facilitate meetings through FaceTime video calls in addition to daily picture/video communications. Because our dogs will go on to live with the best match families we realize that communication is key both on our end and that of the perspective adoptive families.
