This week on the Jazz Break at Noon, we honor the late saxophonist, Sonny Rollins.

Rollins stood as one of the greatest living giants of jazz over the last 70 years.

A contemporary of titans including Miles Davis, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, and Thelonious Monk, Rollins has been hailed as one of the greatest saxophonists in jazz history along with John Coltrane—an acknowledgment reserved only for the most impactful jazz luminaries in the history of the music.

Sonny Rollins passed away on May 25th. This week, we’ll celebrate “Newk,” as he was affectionately known by Miles Davis, to explore recordings from nearly every significant period in his expansive recording history.

Our listening session will spotlight Rollins’ recordings for the Prestige, Blue Note, and Milestone record labels. We’ll feature exclusive interview segments and welcome special guests to the studio to discuss Rollins’ contributions to composition and performance.

Join us as we celebrate the great Saxophone Colossus, Sonny Rollins.
