This Month | Weekend Workshop: Peekaboo Mending

Bring your neglected garments and give them an entirely new personality in this hands-on workshop, led by Anfisa Brewer of Dirty Bones Design Co. All supplies are providedβ€”just bring your garment (thick, tightly woven items like cargo pants, hoodies, and denim work best). Participants can expect to pick from a wide variety of secondhand fabrics to pair with their garment, then map out their patches with paper stencils, sew them in, and refine their cutouts with their choice of distressed or stitched finishing!

Anfisa is a multidisciplinary artist and informal educator based in San Antonio, Texas. Their creative mission is to inspire others and empower them to pursue autonomy and hope through cultivating their own creativity. Working with a variety of mediums such as printmaking, sewing, ceramics, and stained glass, Anfisa continually seeks new skills to explore the multifaceted nature of being human.

Sustainability and resourcefulness are central to their practice, and they are always finding innovative ways to bring art to the people, encouraging others to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.

Artpace is excited to announce this year’s Curatorial Resident, Maya Manley! Maya will be in residence now until the end of June.

Maya is an emerging art historian and curator from Atlanta, GA, who values culture, creativity, community, and consciousness. She received her B.A. in Art History and Curatorial Studies from Clark Atlanta University (CAU) and is a member of the AUC Art Collective. At CAU, she worked with the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum (CAUAM), supporting its curator on exhibitions such as Innervisions: Reflections on Black Abstractions, Ancestral Mirrors (Shanequa Gay), and Uncommon Nature: The Abstractions of Freddie Styles. A lover of art and her community, Maya Manley has supported Atlanta Art Week in 2024 and 2025, and will return to contribute to this year’s iteration. Maya has a background in museum education, administration, and studio management with organizations such as San Francisco International Airport Museum, CAUAM, and Molly Sanyour Ceramics Studio. Maya champions Black women and Black q***r artists through exhibitions, writing, and curatorial activism.

Artpace’s Curatorial Residency is a partnership between Artpace and Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective for graduates of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. This residency program aims to shape the future of the art world's ecosystem and position the Atlanta University Center as the leading incubator and educator of African American professionals in these fields.

The Artpace Curatorial Residency Program is made possible through generous support from The Rea Charitable Trust, the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

We're so excited to be part of Maya’s journey as she continues to develop her practice and to welcome her to San Antonio!

Our team has been hard at work bringing 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧 to life β€” and tomorrow, you'll finally get to see it.

How do you see yourself β€” and how do others see you? 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧 brings together four Artpace alumni artists whose video works reexamine identity through self-portraits, projections of the self, and the body as a means of self-representation. Featuring Alex Bag, Paul Pfeiffer, Kang Seung Lee, and Anne Wallace, each artist approaches selfhood through a distinct lens β€” video performance, observation, reflection on physical change, and narrative experimentation β€” united in their exploration of how identity is constructed, performed, and perceived. Together, their works offer a multifaceted exploration of identity, inviting viewers to consider the many ways it is constructed, performed, and perceived.

Join us tomorrow for the opening reception!

What an incredible day! DreamLab brought families together for a day of art, fun, and community, and we couldn't be more grateful to everyone who joined us and made it such a wonderful event. πŸ’«

Thank you to all the artists, makers, and participants who made DreamLab a memorable celebration of creativity and community. Your talent and enthusiasm continue to make Artpace a vital hub for artistic exploration in San Antonio! And none of DreamLab would have been possible without the generous support of our incredible sponsors, H-E-B and the City of San Antonio City Council Project Fund, and their belief in our mission.

We're already looking forward to what's ahead β€” we can't wait to welcome everyone back for our next DreamLab in the fall!

NEXT WEEK | Join us Thursday, June 11, from 6-8PM for the Opening Reception of 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧, a group exhibition that reexamines video art at Artpace through the work of four alumni artists. Each artist investigates the complexities of identity through self-portraits, projections of the self, and the body as a means of self-representation. This exhibition explores both how individuals perceive themselves and how others might view them.

While each artist employs distinct strategiesβ€”whether through video performance, observation, reflection on physical change, or narrative experimentationβ€”they are united in their examination of selfhood. Together, these works offer a multifaceted exploration of identity, inviting viewers to consider the many ways it is constructed, performed, and perceived.

Featured alumni artists include Alex Bag, Paul Pfieffer, Kang Seung Lee, and Anne Wallace.

Last week, Artpace welcomed students, families, friends, and SAISD art faculty to celebrate the opening of π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜‰π˜¦π˜΄π˜΅ 𝘐𝘯𝘡𝘦𝘯𝘡π˜ͺ𝘰𝘯𝘴, an evening honoring the young artists whose work fills our Hudson Showroom with creativity and heart.

π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜‰π˜¦π˜΄π˜΅ 𝘐𝘯𝘡𝘦𝘯𝘡π˜ͺ𝘰𝘯𝘴 brings together more than 80 works in ceramics, painting, and sculpture selected from K–12 visual art programs across San Antonio Independent School District. Each year, SAISD's Visual Art Department reviews student work from district-wide classrooms and identifies pieces that represent the highest level of creative achievement at every grade level β€” from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The result is a curated cross-section of student artmaking that reflects both the breadth of the district's curriculum and each young artist's individual vision, and we have the honor of displaying their work in one of our galleries.

Taken together, this exhibition makes a powerful case for K–12 art education as a site of real artistic production β€” and for the students of SAISD as artists in the fullest sense of the word.

Their works are on view at Artpace's Hudson Showroom through June 1. Make sure to experience these young artists’ work during your next visit!

We are thrilled to celebrate the dedication of π˜”π˜¦π˜΅π˜³π˜° π˜™π˜’π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘀𝘦, a new public artwork by Artpace Residencies and Exhibitions Manager Rhys Munro, alongside the dedication of Diana Kersey's work, a wonderful moment honoring two remarkable artists and their contributions to San Antonio's public art landscape.

Located at the intersection of N Santa Rosa and W Commerce, π˜”π˜¦π˜΅π˜³π˜° π˜™π˜’π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘀𝘦 transforms daylight into waves of shifting color through architectural glass panels that catch and refract the sun throughout the day, and glow softly from within at night. A beacon of warmth and connection in the heart of San Antonio, π˜”π˜¦π˜΅π˜³π˜° π˜™π˜’π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯𝘀𝘦 is described as a piece that reminds us that beauty is not static but revealed in time, carried by memory, and open to all.

We were so proud to celebrate this incredible milestone with our team and the San Antonio community. πŸŽ‰

From the Archives | Stills from Spring 2003 International Artist-in-Residence Paul Pfeiffer's work

During his 2003 residency, artist Paul Pfeiffer examined popular iconography of sports and pop culture. Through the generous support of the San Antonio Spurs organization, Pfeiffer was granted access to the then-SBC Center, filming not just the players but the peripheral figures who make the spectacle run – the support staff. The result of his footage is a video work that quietly inverts our gaze, pulling the focus from the court to an armed security guard standing just outside it.

Pfeiffer's digital manipulations strip mass media of its context, decontextualizing mass media spectacles and referencing Guy Debord's π˜›π˜©π˜¦ 𝘚𝘰𝘀π˜ͺ𝘦𝘡𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘡𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘀𝘡𝘒𝘀𝘭𝘦, compelling the viewer to confront our own complicity in the media we consume. At Artpace, Pfieffer continued his investigation of the spectacle of the media with three new video works that altered images from a pop music video, a beauty pageant, and a professional basketball game.

By partnering with Pfieffer to make this work possible, the Spurs organization understood that culture extends beyond the court. As the Spurs write a new chapter this playoff season, we look back at a moment when basketball became art, and art became a mirror.
