What to expect:

The concert opens with Arturo Márquez’ Danzon No.2, written in 1994 and blasted into the music world’s consciousness during the 2007 North American tour by Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.

Then, two sets of lively Afro-Caribbean-influenced dances composed in 1953 by this season’s Foreground Composer Florence Price (Dances in the Canebrakes and Suite of Dances) will evoke the lively rhythms and familiar genres of early music and dance culture in the Deep South.

After intermission, we are joined by superstar multi-international-award-winning mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski for selections from George Bizet’s unforgettable Carmen.

A wonderful Saturday afternoon at Children & Family Weekend: Creativity, Resilience, and Your Unique Voice:

Erin Walsh joined us for a thoughtful and engaging conversation about helping young people build resilience and thrive in a digital world, while children and youth took part in poetry workshops with The Loft Literary Center.

The afternoon continued with a poetry slam and music performances by Hope Arts Center students.

On Sunday, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre joined us for an afternoon of creativity for Children & Family Weekend, presented by Hope Arts Center and The House of Hope Presbyterian Church.

Families created their own masks during drop-in workshops, then gathered for a parade led by Heart of the Beast’s giant puppets—bringing everyone together before our conversation with Kwame Alexander.
