Esperanza United is honored to join as Orlando City Hall lights up purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Vivian will speak to this year’s theme, Awareness and Empathy, and what it takes to make sure every survivor, in every language, can find safety and support.

On Sunday, October 11, Mayte Rodriguez Ortiz, Transitional Housing Family Advocate at Esperanza United, joined KARE 11 Sunday to talk about the intersection of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, and about how culture, language, and traditions can be a source of strength for survivors.
She also spoke about the barriers Latine survivors can face when looking for help, like limited language access, isolation from family, and fears related to immigration status, and why recognizing the signs of abuse matters, since abuse isn't always physical.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is hosting a Domestic Violence Resource Fair, bringing together community organizations to share valuable resources and support services for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local service providers and learn about available programs and resources.

Latina Equal Pay Day falls on October 8 this year, marking how far into 2026 Latinas must work to earn what white, non-Hispanic men earned by the end of 2025.

The numbers: Latinas working full time are paid 58 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. That adds up to $33,620 lost every year, and $1.3 million lost over a 40-year career. Even a professional degree doesn't close the gap, Latinas with one still lose more than $2.8 million over their careers.

Here at home, a 2026 report from the Women's Foundation of Minnesota found Latina women in our state make 63 cents on the dollar, with lifetime losses topping $1 million.

At Esperanza United, we know pay equity is about more than a paycheck. Financial independence is often what makes it possible for survivors to leave an unsafe relationship and build something new. Closing this gap protects the whole community.

As we look ahead to Esperanza United’s 45th anniversary, our CEO, Vivian Huelgo, and Adriana Alejandro Osorio sat down with Doña Elsa, one of our founders, to hear the story of our beginnings in her own words.

From four sisters building something their community needed, to the creation of our first shelter and the growth of Esperanza United, her story reminds us that everything we do today is rooted in the courage, community, and vision of the women who came before us.

On September 29, in Rochester, our Chief Strategy and Programs Officer, Annika Gifford, testified before the Minnesota Truth Council at its fourth and final public meeting, "A Window into Policies and Systems Contributing to Harm."

She spoke about what our communities lived through during Operation Metro Surge last winter. Survivors stopped leaving their homes. They avoided hospitals, courts, and places of worship. Many did not call 911, even during the worst of assaults, because they could not tell a local officer from a federal agent.

"In our work, one lesson holds above all others: safety depends on trust."

Annika also shared six measures that would help families heal and rebuild trust, from protecting sensitive locations like hospitals, schools, and shelters to sustained investment in culturally specific survivor services.

She closed with a reminder of what safety truly means:

"For a survivor, safety is not the absence of violence. It is being able to reach out and know that someone will answer without putting them or their family at risk."
