March is National Nutrition Month!

Understanding portions and servings and being mindful when serving yourself are good ways to help prevent overeating and promote overall well-being.

Plus, using a mindful eating strategy can help create healthier relationships with food by bringing awareness to what you eat and drink. Use all senses when eating, and avoid distractions to better focus on hunger cues and fullness. This month, try practicing mindful eating when enjoying meals at home and while dining out.

Two-Part Podcast Series on The Impact of Ultra-Processed Foods

Have you ever wondered why the foods you crave don't always leave you feeling your best after eating them? What if you knew these foods are designed to be addictive and play with our dopamine levels? This is what happens in ultra-processed foods.

In this two-part series, we speak with Barry Smith, PhD, sensory expert, founding director of the Center for the Study of Senses, and a scientist that has worked with food companies and learned how hard they work to hijack our food cravings, about what defines ultra-processed foods, how companies work to make these foods addictive, and what exactly is happening in our brains to crave these unhealthy foods.

We’ll also identify what we should really be looking for on ingredient labels to make better choices and tips for hijacking our brains back to help us reduce our cravings of ultra-processed foods.

The Link Between Nutrition and Mental Health

Today, there’s plenty of research that shows the ways nutrition affects our mental health. What we eat can play a vital role in our mental and emotional health.

Missing key vitamins and minerals can lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety. Nutritional deficiencies may even add to cognitive disorders and dementia. The brain needs healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, including plant-based proteins. A diet without these healthy foods can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body.

People who grapple with depression, anxiety and dementia often lack some key vitamins and minerals. What foods should you eat to support your mental health? No one has the exact same dietary needs. But some nutrients are helpful for most everyone.
