Last month we welcomed a new group of Nazareth University Physical Therapy students who will be working with our participants throughout the semester! (Nazareth University Nazareth University Doctor of Physical Therapy program )

Hereโ€™s a recap of their first visit, the students spent time meeting with each participant and learning about their interests, needs, and goals for physical therapy. They also completed physical assessments to get a better understanding of each participantโ€™s individual abilities and where theyโ€™d like to make progress.

Over the next several weeks, the students will use what they learned during these initial meetings to work hands-on with participants and support their individual PT goals! We are excited to share more of these physical therapy sessions.

Stay tuned to catch up on what the student have done so far with our group!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Last week, Hickok Center participants enjoyed an outing to TJ Maxx! Participants spent time browsing the aisles, checking out different items, and doing a little shopping together.

Yesterday, our team spent the day together on Conesus Lake for our annual staff retreat! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

This yearโ€™s theme was โ€œWho Am I? Who Are We?โ€ Throughout the day, we learned more about each other and how our individual strengths and personalities help make the Hickok Center what it is. We shared our Hickok stories, favorite songs, created our very own Hickok playlist, and enjoyed games, a scavenger hunt, and plenty of laughs! Staff also had the opportunity to step into the roles of their coworkers, gaining a better understanding of what each person brings to our team. Together, we worked on dream boards to share our ideas and hopes for how we want the Hickok Center to grow in the future.

We also took time to recognize the coworkers who make our workdays better and enjoyed breakfast, lunch, personalized gifts, and matching shirts!

Staff retreats give us a chance to step away from our everyday responsibilities, get to know one another better, and appreciate the work that goes into everything we do. Building these relationships and understanding each otherโ€™s roles helps us work better together and, in turn, better support the participants we serve.

Weโ€™re grateful for this team and the opportunity to spend a day appreciating each other, the center, and the mission that means so much to us all. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Last week, DSPs Jamier and Gavin led participants through a few hands-on science experiments! We made disappearing ink, created our own bouncy balls, and made glow-in-the-dark test tubes.

Activities like these are a fun way to work on following directions, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and curiosity while learning something new along the way!

๐Ÿข ๐ŸŒณ Last week, participants spent the day exploring Maplewood Nature Center! We learned all about box turtles, and even got to see one face to face to get a closer look at some of the features that make them so unique. We also met Sassy the black pine snake, felt pieces of shed snake skin, explored different textures, checked out animal skulls, and tried some of the nature-based matching activities throughout the center.

Hands-on outings like this give participants a chance to learn through touch, observation, and conversation while working on cognition, sensory engagement, and social skills. We finished our visit with a walk around the center and some time outside enjoying the fresh air!

This weekโ€™s music therapy with Hochstein had everyone singing, playing instruments, and getting up and moving to โ€œThriller.โ€ And of course, our DSPs joined right in with the dance moves! ๐Ÿ’š

We love seeing how music therapy gets everyone involved while giving participants opportunities to work on movement, coordination, memory, self-expression, and social connection.

Last week, we celebrated DSP Abby with a dinosaur-themed baby shower and farewell party! Staff gathered gifts for Abby and her baby girl, and everyone had so much fun celebrating together.

Saying goodbye to Abby as she moves closer to family is bittersweet, but weโ€™re so excited for this new chapter for her as she prepares to welcome her baby girl. She will be so missed by our staff and participants, and everyone is already looking forward to getting updates and seeing pictures once baby girl arrives!

Weโ€™re wishing Abby and her growing family all the best! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›
