August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognize the many ways families can be supported in meeting their infant feeding goals.

Home visitors are uniquely positioned to provide families with trusted, individualized support during pregnancy and after a baby arrives. Research from Healthy Families New York has explored how conversations between home visitors and families about breastfeeding may help support breastfeeding continuation.

This week, the Healthy Families America network had the opportunity to hear directly from Healthy Families New York researchers about their findings and what they may mean for home visiting practice.

The research reinforces the important role home visitors can play by creating space for ongoing conversations, responding to families’ questions and needs, and connecting families with information and resources that support their goals.

During National Breastfeeding Month, we celebrate the home visitors and families having these conversations every day and the research that helps us continue learning how to strengthen support for families.

Compensation – It Really Matters! You’ve heard us talk about the registration updates before, and there’s a good reason—we need your help. The new registration system officially went live late July! (Even if you aren’t planning to visit the Institute anytime soon, would you take a few minutes to log in and update your information?)

The compensation data you provide is essential to improving the home visiting profession. We can’t effectively advocate for better compensation when we don’t know the current baseline. Your participation helps us tell the story of the workforce with accurate, meaningful data.

The new registration questions ask for your:
• Hourly wage
• Full-time or part-time employment status
• Counties where you provide services

If your work isn’t limited to a few counties, you can simply select Statewide.

The Institute takes your privacy seriously. We have multiple security measures in place to protect your information. Individual learner data is never shared—only aggregate data is used for reporting and advocacy.

Happy learning, Janet Horras

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to pilot our revised certification pre-assessment!

We could still use a few more volunteers, especially current home visitors with at least one year of experience and with a high school diploma or less formal education.

Our goal is to make sure the assessment strikes the right balance—not too easy and not too difficult. If you’re interested in helping, SIGN UP: https://theinstitutefsp.fillout.com/t/4kJaNzQj31us

Your feedback will help us create better experiences for future certification candidates.
