Can you say semiquincentennial 3 times really fast? We can't either! But we can say "Give me Liberty or give me Death"!

In a nod to our Nation's 250th Birthday - we're hosting a special guest - Patrick Henry Jolly will present a first person portrayal of Patrick Henry, giving context to one of the most famous phrases in American history.

Join us this Wednesday, June 17 at 12pm at Charter Hall in downtown Roanoke. Social time and lunch will be followed by our special presenter. All are welcome!

Patrick Henry Jolly has been studying the life of his ancestor since the early 1990s, and portraying Henry for nearly as long. He has been involved at Patrick Henry's Red Hill since 1999, and can often be found on-site, speaking with visitors and giving tours.
Patrick just concluded performing in "Oh Henry! A Revolutionary Life!", a play based on the life of Patrick Henry.

This week we're excited to have Dr. Dana Ackley join us at our Wednesday lunch meeting! He is an Internationally recognized expert in Emotional Intelligence and currently works as an executive coach and organizational consultant. Ackley is also a co-Founder of The Roanoke Collaboration Project

Dr. Ackley will be speaking about how we can better develop our Emotional Intelligence (EQ) skills in order to improve how we use our brain, do better at work, build better relationships, and resist the manipulation of conflict entrepreneurs who seek to divide our country, setting up groups to hate each other. It is time to stop calling fellow citizens the enemy.

All are welcome to join us! Lunch begins at 12pm, Kiwanis business meeting is at 1230pm, and the program begins at 1pm. Location is Charter Hall (3rd Floor Roanoke City Market Building)

This time of year is very rewarding for our club, as we give away some of the funds raised at our annual Pancake Event! We awarded $20,000 for six scholarships to high school seniors.

Students completed an application with a personal history, their expected field of interest for college, transcripts, and extracurricular and service activities. Applicants also provided letters of recommendation.
The Kiwanis Scholarship Committee read through all applications and scored them based on financial need, community service, and academic achievement. Six finalists were then interviewed by the committee.

Awards include the Franklin Award ($6,000) named for former Kiwanian Stu Franklin and his wife; the Henh Ly Award ($4,000) named for a Kiwanis Scholarship recipient who was tragically killed in the 2008 shootings at Virginia Tech; and four additional scholarship finalists were awarded $2,500 each. We would especially like to thank our sponsor – Pinnacle Bank Financial Partners.

Awards of $2,500 each were presented to Safana “Xen” Wajed, Daniel Horne, Jr, and Camila Moctezuma Carrizales of William Fleming High School and Brinna Seidel of Patrick Henry High School.

The $4,000 Henh Ly Award was given to Emily Tull of Cave Spring High School.

The $6,000 Franklin Scholarship was won by Ernesto Gomez-Meza of William Fleming High School.
