On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas โ the day we commemorate as ๐๐๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ต.
Less than a year later, the ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐น ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ญ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฒ affirmed that freedom had to include the right to own a home regardless of race. A century later, the ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ฐ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ญ๐ต๐ฒ๐ด made equal access to housing the law of the land.
But 161 years later, ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ผ๐บ remains unfinished.
Our offices are closed today in observance, but our mission doesn't rest. We ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ โ until fair housing is not just the law, but the lived reality for everyone in the Commonwealth.
