Today marks the birthday of Leonard Bernstein, a musician whose influence continues to shape the classical music world.

Few artists have done more to connect audiences with orchestral music. Through his work as a composer, conductor, and educator, Bernstein helped define what American classical music could be: expressive, accessible, curious, and deeply connected to the culture around it. In his own words, "Music can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable." —Leonard Bernstein

That legacy is the starting point for our Opening Weekend Symphony Series program, American Originals: Bernstein, Foley & Still. Bernstein's Candide Overture launches the evening with the vitality and musical personality that made his work instantly recognizable.

🎻 Big news for music lovers!

The Richmond Symphony, Central Virginia’s largest performing arts organization and one of the region’s leading cultural institutions, is once again headlining the RVA East End Festival!

They’re taking the stage at 1 p.m. on Sept. 26th at the 17th Street Market with an engaging and energetic program that will span two centuries of music, pairing beloved classical favorites with contemporary American music.

The performance will feature:

On this day in 1882, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture made its public debut in Moscow. Written in 1880 to commemorate Russia's defense against Napoleon's 1812 invasion, the work transformed a moment of national memory into one of classical music's most recognizable concert spectacles.

The overture opens not with triumph, but with a solemn, hymn-like melody, creating a reflective and deeply Russian atmosphere before the drama unfolds. From there, Tchaikovsky builds an epic musical narrative culminating in brass fanfares and the famous cannon blasts that helped cement the work's enduring popularity.

Although rooted in Russian history, the 1812 Overture found an unexpected second life in the United States, where its explosive finale became a favorite accompaniment to Independence Day and Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. Today, it remains one of Tchaikovsky's most beloved compositions and a symbol of musical grandeur around the world.

Swipe ➡️ to explore intimate performances bringing chamber orchestra, concertos and choral music to beautiful venues throughout the region, including:

• Louis F. Ryan Recital Hall at St. Christopher’s School

• Blackwell Auditorium at Randolph-Macon College

• Perkinson Center for the Arts

Featuring Erin Lano, Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 showcases the horn’s heroic character and lyrical warmth.

In contrast, Brahms’s Serenade No. 2 comprises of five movements, featuring an expansive central Adagio surrounded by four energetic dance-like movements. Its unusual scoring, which includes full woodwinds, two horns, and strings without violins, highlights the wind instruments and creates a distinctly darker sound palette.

Together, these beloved works highlight the expressive beauty and craftsmanship of the Romantic era.
 
Did you know that Brahm’s Serenade No. 2 was dedicated to Clara Schumann?

Led by Richard Robbins and featuring the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Symphony Chorus (Richmond Symphony Chorus), this program brings together Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands, a moving and thought-provoking work for choir and strings; Britten’s vibrant Sinfonietta, Op. 1, and his luminous choral miniature “Concord” from Gloriana.

The concert concludes with Copland’s “The Promise of Living” from The Tender Land, a heartfelt and uplifting tribute to shared purpose and hope.

Enjoy this opportunity to see Music Director Valentina Peleggi up close as she leads this three-day Neighborhood concert program.

Richmond Symphony Associate Principal Cello, Jason McComb, takes centerstage for Saint-Saëns’s dazzling Cello Concerto No. 1, a virtuosic showcase of passion and lyricism.

The concert concludes with Schubert’s dramatic Symphony No. 4, “Tragic,” a work of striking intensity and energy.

This one-night-only dynamic program opens with Gideon Klein’s Partita for String Orchestra, a vibrant and expressive work full of rhythmic energy.

Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1, featuring Richmond Symphony Associate Principal Clarinet Eddie Sundra, is a dazzling showcase of virtuosity and lyrical brilliance.

Today is Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day!

In its honor, we are highlighting two instruments, the double bass and tuba, and two soloists, Xavier Foley and Conrad Shaw, who will be featured in the upcoming 2026-27 Symphony Series!

We are so excited to showcase the virtuosity of these uncommonly featured instruments with concertos programmed across the season!
