Mr. Chris was the one who showed up. Every retreat. Every time this program needed someone to be present, he was there. And he saw the best in every one of us. He died the way he lived: standing up for people.

We deeply appreciate all he poured into the youth of ALP. We will continue his legacy of kindness; we will not be moved.

Thank you, Mr. Chris. We love you.

We are celebrating 25 years of impact and we want you with us.

Generations of students have come through this program. Hundreds of mentors, partners, and supporters have shown up alongside them, shaping what ALP has become today. This milestone belongs to all of us.

If ALP has ever been part of your story as a mentor, partner, supporter, or student, this moment is for you. Come celebrate the community that continues to show up for young people in Richmond and honor what we’ve built together.

Let’s give ALP its flowers, and keep them growing. Spread the word, repost, and share!

“Empowerment begins when you decide your worth.” - Nora Valen.

In honor of Women’s History Month, ALP has shown up in a myriad of meaningful ways this month. First, our students read and reflected on a snippet of the book “Somebody Give This Heart a Pen” by Sophia Thakur. With vivid imagery and heartfelt storytelling, she captures the struggles and beauty of adolescence, relationships, and finding one’s place in the world.

Sage did an outstanding job highlighting how ALP addresses the social determinants of health through her advocacy project for the Faith & Action forum at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Later that week, she led students in mindfulness and laughter therapy activities, helping them relax, reduce stress, and foster a more positive and engaging learning environment.

Thank you, Taylor, of the University of Richmond REACH program, for the “Building Respect, Integrity, and Accountability” presentation equipping the students with essential knowledge and skills.

A heartfelt thank you to First Presbyterian Church for blessing our students with healthy snacks and food boxes for the upcoming Spring Break. Your support makes a meaningful difference.

Happy Spring Equinox

Shout out for the close of a meaningful and empowering Black History Month, with D’mon Reynolds on Thursday at the Blue Sky Fund location. Journey for Change introduced us last year, and the connection has been very fruitful. The students were encouraged by three messages: remembrance, standing up against injustice, and standing firmly for truth-telling. We pray that these lessons remain with them long after BHM. Also, kudos to Nomad Deli for providing a delicious meal. And many thanks and appreciation to Antwonda Mealey, Class of 2014 for her support and guidance over the past few months. Safe travels on your journey! And finally a moment to remember community activist King Salim Khalfani. Rest in power… job well done 🦋

ALP was filled with empowerment and community as we continued our Soul Food Café series for Black History Month. We were honored to host award-winning photographer Lou Jones, whose powerful images chronicled his life and legacy that deeply inspired the students. We attended chapel service honoring Rev. Jesse Jackson, followed by a soul-filling dinner with mentors and the Richmond Hill family. Then, Friday night was the boys and girls sleepover promoting bonding, creating safe spaces for deeper conversations, sharing affirmations, and tons of fun! These moments fed body and soul and we can’t wait for what is coming next!

Black History Month may come in the coldest season, but this month reminded us that even in the hardest conditions, giants rise!

Through experiential learning, our Armstrong Leadership students have once again engaged their minds and their hearts. We competed in Black History Trivia with UR’s REACH Program, and last week, we explored the VMFA’s Giants exhibit.

For our students, representation matters. Seeing the depth, beauty, and variety of Black art and influence affirmed identity, sparked pride, and reminded our students that greatness lives within all of them.

Reflecting on the representation in the exhibit, one of our students said “the exhibit represents beauty, resilience, connection and joy within the Black community. It’s okay to be comfortable in my Black skin.”

Like our Soul Food Café series states, we feed both our minds and our bodies! Thank you to the VMFA for helping us see the giants in all of us, and to Irie Ting for nourishing us with delicious Jamaican Food.

Grateful for the love, learning, and community that makes this work possible.
