VALOR SERVICE PRIDE ~ A tremendous honor to donate a piece of WTC Tower I Steel recovered from Ground Zero to the Virginia State Police yesterday, to go alongside a stone artifact recovered from the Pentagon in Arlington County, VA. Connecting the fateful events of 9/11 nearly 25 years ago with the present generation of law enforcement and members of the current Basic Session at the Va. State Police Academy was a moving and powerful event for our all-volunteer foundation. Thank you to the VSP executive leadership including Col. Katz and Capt. Kincaid for your support and words, to Ms. Hanover Alexia Williams for the moving renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America 🇺🇸🇺🇸, and to the VSP Public Information Office for spreading the word.

The foundation earned bipartisan support to make the Freedom Flag Virginia’s official 9/11 flag of remembrance in 2018.

The individual stories. It still seems unbelievable, nearly 25 years later.

She Almost Made It Home.
On the evening of September 10, 2001, a 21-year-old college student stood in a New Jersey airport, waiting to fly back to California.
Her name was Nicole Carol Miller.
She had grown up in San Jose surrounded by a big, loud, loving family — a sister, half-siblings, and parents who cheered her on through everything. At Pioneer High School, she gave everything to softball, playing all four years and earning a college scholarship in her senior year.
She was the kind of person people noticed immediately — not because she demanded attention, but because she radiated something. Energy. Warmth. Determination. The kind of smile that changed the temperature of a room.
At West Valley College in Saratoga, California, she made the Dean's List while working part-time as a waitress and teaching fitness classes in San Jose. She worked out every single day. She was finishing her last eight units. By January 2002, she planned to transfer to California State University to complete her degree.
Her boyfriend Ryan Brown had been by her side for six years. In letters to him, she sometimes signed her name playfully: Nicole Miller-Brown. She loved hiking, horses, softball, jogging — and never turned down a chai tea latte. Purple was her color.
That September, she had made a spontaneous decision to fly east and spend a few days vacationing with a friend — touring Manhattan, walking New Jersey boardwalks, soaking in the ocean air. The kind of trip a 21-year-old takes when life feels full of open doors.
On the evening of September 10, she was ready to go home.
Then a thunderstorm rolled in. Her flight was cancelled.
She rebooked for the following morning.
The flight she boarded on September 11, 2001 was United Airlines Flight 93.
Nicole was 21 years old.
We know what happened next. The hijacking. The passengers who refused to surrender. The courage that filled that cabin at 35,000 feet. The crash in a Pennsylvania field near Shanksville — and the unknown target that was never reached because ordinary people chose to fight back.
Nicole Carol Miller was one of them.
She is remembered today at the Flight 93 National Memorial alongside the passengers and crew who gave everything that morning. But the people who loved her most remember something the memorial can't fully capture:
The girl who earned a scholarship through sheer hard work.
The student who made the Dean's List while working two jobs.
The young woman who signed love letters with her future name.
And the thunderstorm on September 10 — the small, ordinary twist of weather — that rerouted one bright, unstoppable life into history.
She almost made it home.
She still deserves to be remembered.
🕊️ Nicole Carol Miller — March 4, 1980 – September 11, 2001

Help make the 9/11 "Freedom Flag" Maryland’s Official Symbol of Remembrance for Sept. 11, 2001! ~ Tues. Mar. 17th MD Govn’t Labor & Elections Cmte. will hear HB 1103 to see the Freedom Flag become Maryland's Official Flag of Remembrance for 9/11. Now is the time as we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11 this September! Please Like & Share!

🇺🇸 WHO Does the Freedom Flag Honor and Remember? ~ The 2,977 who perished in NYC, at the Pentagon (Arlington Co., VA), and in Somerset, PA (near Shanksville), including the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and over 70 members of NYPD and The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey who responded heroically.

🇺🇸 WHAT is the Freedom Flag? ~ America's only codified 9/11 Flag of Remembrance, adopted in Virginia, Oklahoma, Delaware, and California, and flown in all 50 states. Its 10 powerful red-white-blue elements symbolize the "who, what, and where" of 9/11 poignantly and respectfully, in accordance with "Good Flag Design" principles of NAVA, the North American Vexillological Association.

The Freedom Flag's unique & poignant symbolism:
💔 4 Red Stripes - all we lost in the hijacked aircraft and at the 4 attack sites in NY, VA, and PA

💔 3 White Stripes - the heroic first responders – fire, police, rescue – who perished and sacrificed for months of recovery efforts

🇺🇸 5 White Bars - the organized protection of our freedoms by the traditional branches of our military

🤍White Star - all who've lived and died for freedom

💙Blue Field - All Americans United for freedom

🇺🇸 WHEN to fly the Freedom Flag ~ We recommend raising the Freedom Flag below the US Flag on Sept. 11 (half staff) each year and flying it through the end of September. If desired, the Freedom Flag may be flown or displayed year-round.

🇺🇸 WHERE to fly the Freedom Flag ~ On flag poles, houses, mailboxes, RVs, boats, indoors or outdoors ... pretty much anywhere you would fly a flag. But ALWAYS display with protocol & respect to the US Flag and other Official / State Flags (below or beside them).

🇺🇸 WHY #1 ~ To keep the promise we made to Never Forget 9/11. 25 years have passed, and we must always remember the 2,977 victims, our first responder heroes, and all who continue to suffer from 9/11-related illnesses even today.

🇺🇸 WHY #2 ~ To educate the 80+ million Americans - including nearly 1.5 million Marylanders, an entire generation! - born since 9/11 or who were too young to remember the events of that fateful day.

🇺🇸 HOW to Display ~ The Freedom Flag can be flown alone or with other flags, but always follow proper US and State flag protocol! The tip of the White Star points up when flown horizontally or to the right when flown vertically (see photos). Display with pride!
