Historic Downtown Tappahannock is helping one of Virginia’s most historic downtowns imagine what comes next.

Set along the Rappahannock River, Tappahannock’s downtown district reflects generations of community life, commerce, and connection. Today, Historic Downtown Tappahannock is building on that legacy through preservation-based economic development, support for local businesses, tourism initiatives, cultural programming, and community partnerships that bring new energy into the heart of town.

For Executive Director Cupper Dickinson and Board President Jovita Kelly, that work is about more than events. It is about revitalization. It is about creating reasons for people to gather, shop, visit, invest, and help ensure downtown remains a vibrant center of community life.

Now, through VCDC’s Mission Elevation program, they are strengthening the organization behind that work by building sustainable funding, developing a stronger board, and growing the volunteer base needed to support long-term revitalization efforts.

That’s what Mission Elevation is all about: investing in the organizations investing in our communities.

Last month, VCDC was proud to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Townhomes at Liberty Place, a new affordable housing community in Richmond, Virginia. 🏠🙌

Developed with Canterbury Enterprises, Townhomes at Liberty Place brings 40 affordable homes to families and households earning 40%, 50%, and 60% of Area Median Income. The community reflects the character of Richmond’s neighborhoods while offering modern, energy-efficient homes designed with accessibility, comfort, and long-term affordability in mind.

We are grateful to the partners, community leaders, and investors in our VCDC Housing Equity Fund 27 who helped bring this development to life and expand access to quality affordable housing in the City of Richmond.

From unveiling the newest Housing Indicator Tool to celebrating the Housing Achievement Award, Generation& Scholarship and Children’s Essay Contest winners, it’s a moment for impact and inspiration.

This year’s theme, “35 Years of Making HOMES,” invites us to reflect on 35 years of creating affordable homes and the regional collaboration needed to continue strengthening communities across our region.

If you're attending, make sure to stop by the VCDC table and say hey!

We’re excited to have ShaDawn Moody-Elizondo and Hope Rutter representing VCDC at the 2026 National Women’s Affordable Housing Network (WAHN) Summit in San Diego this week. 🌞We’re especially proud that Hope will be speaking as part of this year’s program!

Guess who took home first place at the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials golf fundraiser this year...that's right, VCDC did it again! We loved connecting with partners and colleagues at the conference this year. While we were in the area, we got to visit Judeo Christian Outreach Center's new development nearing construction completion, JCOC 3H Housing, which is bringing 38 affordable homes to very low-income and formerly unhoused residents in Virginia Beach. This community will serve as a life-changing place for residents to call home, and we're so proud to partner with JCOC to help bring it to life.

We’re proud to welcome Woods George Apartments to VCDC’s lending portfolio.

This exciting adaptive reuse project, led by Woodlands Development & Lending, is bringing new life to a historic building in downtown Philippi, WV, creating high-quality affordable homes and first-floor commercial space for the community.

A big thank you to the partners who helped make this project possible, including Woodlands Development & Lending, Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Freedom Bank West Virginia, Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, the West Virginia Housing Development Fund, and the City of Philippi, WV.

VCDC Community Lenders was proud to support this effort with a $500,000 construction loan to help restore the building, preserve its historic character, and expand housing opportunity in Philippi.
