Book Cover Reveal and Celebration with Librarian Wendy DeGroat

All are invited to join Wendy DeGroat at a cover reveal celebration & reading for her forthcoming documentary poetry book: What Doesn’t Burn: Imagining Richmond’s Grace Arents in Poems. The event will take place on June 20th from 6:30-7:30pm at CultureWorks. It is free and open to the public. and should last no longer than an hour.

The publication of this book marks the culmination of a 15-year research and writing journey that began when DeGroat ran across an article about Grace in Richmond Magazine. It tells the story of a Progressive-era philanthropist, educator, and social reformer who made a lasting impact on Richmond, particularly the Oregon Hill neighborhood.

DeGroat and the book’s graphic designer, a young local artist, will share a bit about the process as well as some readings from the book.

The Governor’s School Foundation invites families of MLWGS seniors and graduates to purchase inscribed pavers to leave a lasting tribute at the school. This is a great way to honor your student and support the great work done by the Foundation. You can purchase either a Bluestone paver inside the school lobby or a brick paver on Walker Plaza (Lombardy Street side of the school).

Ben’s service will be at Maggie Walker on May 30 from 1-3pm in the auditorium. We’ll be heading over to Main Line Brewery right after to toast to him as well. We invite you to come as you are as there is no expectation to wear black. Let’s celebrate Ben’s vibrant life with some color, patterns, or truly whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

AP Proctors Wanted

Alumni and Alumni Parents!

MLWGS Counseling is seeking a few additional proctors for AP testing, which is May 4th-22nd. There are a few key dates within this window where we have a large number of testers and need a few more hands. Those dates and other info can be found on the following interest form: https://forms.gle/9JC8iYychepuQa8b9.

This form also provides information on the RPS Vendor application, which any person who has not previously been paid by Maggie Walker would need to complete. Proctors are paid hourly, and AP exam proctoring does require proctors to arrive before normal school hours (for morning exams) and staying after school (for afternoon exams). The form itself provides additional details about testing. Please reach out to Rachel Loving ([email protected]), AP Coordinator, with any questions.

Thank you for your interest in proctoring Advanced Placement exams at Maggie Walker Governor's School between May 4 and May 22. Rachel Loving, AP Coordinator, can answer any questions you have about AP proctoring. The goal is to publish an AP Proctor Schedule by Friday, April 24th. AP Proctor Traini...

Students didn’t just learn about government – they engaged with it.

Through the Shamin Hotels Speaker Series, the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Foundation welcomed state legislators on April 10 for a student-led forum on education and civic engagement. From funding and equity to real-world pathways, the conversation connected policy to the classroom and gave students a powerful voice in the process.

Read more about how our students are bringing the conversation home and other MLWGS, Foundation and alumni news in the latest issue of MLWGS Foundation Focus.

🎨🌍 Art has no borders – and neither does learning.
MLWGS visual arts teacher Jeff Hall has been named the first two-time recipient of the Pat Taylor Teaching Award, funded by the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Foundation.
For three weeks in June, Hall will travel across South Africa to explore African art, culture and contemporary artists – experiences he’ll bring back to his students and colleagues through new projects, lessons and perspectives.
He was also the award’s inaugural recipient, making this honor especially meaningful.
