NextUp For every child in an afterschool program in Virginia, four are waiting to get in (Afterschool Alliance - America After 3PM).

NextUp is an out-of-school time (OST) intermediary and nonprofit organization expanding access to quality afterschool and summer programs for Richmond youth ages 11 – 19. There’s a rising demand for greater access to afterschool and summer programs helping youth ages 11 – 19:
- Engage in positive activities that align with their personal interests
- Explore potential career paths
- Improve self-c

onfidence and self-efficacy
- Increase attendance rates, graduation rates, and positive feelings about school
- Connect with peers, mentors, and community leaders

NextUp is an intermediary organization helps equip and mobilize a network of 150+ youth development organizations to serve Richmond youth. We embed partners’ afterschool and summer programs in Richmond Public Middle Schools and support programs across Richmond through the city’s Positive Youth Development initiative. Together, we expand access to safe, enriching out-of-school time opportunities that come at no cost to families.

What have summer Saturdays looked like for Richmond youth? For young women in the Youth Braid and Business Academy summer camp, Saturdays are spent learning cosmetology and business acumen from local and regional experts.

"This program is teaching me about nail tech and how to do hair, makeup, and lashes. And now I want to be a cosmetologist!" says Zoe, a student at Henderson Middle School.

We're proud to partner with Rossie and her team to expand access to high-quality programs like Youth Braid and Business Academy.

Art is a universal language🖌️🎨

This summer, the International Rescue Committee - Richmond hosted programs connecting youth and families from around the world who now call RVA "home".

We had the opportunity to join a recent session where Afghan artist Nazira led a group art-collaging activity. With Spanish interpretation support from Nathalia Cubilos, the group took turns adding their art to each other's canvases, ending in multiple collages of varying art styles.

Thank you to the IRC Richmond for letting us capture snippets of this fun afternoon activity and for your dedication to connecting Richmond youth to enriching out-of-school-time opportunities.
