The Richmond region ranks 49th out of 50 major metropolitan areas for economic mobility. For many families here, working hard is often not enough. Real mobility depends on systems that work together – education aligned with workforce needs, designed for real lives, and accessible to people at every stage.

In our region, community colleges sit at the center of that work. Reynolds Community College, Brightpoint Community College, and their shared workforce division, Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA), are building pathways that connect people to in-demand careers while removing barriers that too often keep opportunity out of reach. Community Purchasing Alliance Cooperative launched in 2010 to solve a need - helping community institutions reduce their operating costs so they can reinvest in their missions and communities.

Through group purchasing processes for facilities-based contracts, CPA helps organizations find better contracts, mission-oriented vendors, and friendlier contract terms. With over 15 years of experience in the DC region, CPA is now expanding to Richmond and looking to support community institutions with their purchasing needs. Through CPA's group purchasing programs, members have saved millions of dollars and countless hours, all while shifting over $60 million dollars to minority-owned businesses.

At this session, you'll hear about CPA's origin story, the way group purchasing works, and their existing DC area programs. Then we'll discuss the vision for Central Virginia - your vision - about what might be possible by purchasing together here in Richmond. Register to Attend: bit.ly/cpacinfosession

Last week, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education honored our CEO, Sherrie Armstrong, on behalf of the Community Foundation at the 20th Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy luncheon.

The annual event, hosted by VFCCE, honors leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges, as well as the statewide foundation. Recipients are nominated for their outstanding commitment to the growth and development of Virginia’s Community Colleges and their respective foundations. We extend our gratitude to Brightpoint Community College for nominating the foundation and celebrating this meaningful recognition with us!

On April 22, we had the pleasure of hosting Philanthropy Across Generations, an evening with Community Foundation fundholders who are anticipating or actively navigating what comes next for their adult children and their family’s philanthropy.

The evening featured Sharna Goldseker, Founder of 21/64 and co-author of Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving. She shared insights on how philanthropic perspectives often differ across generations—and why those differences can present meaningful opportunities.

Candid conversations with local next gen philanthropists Adam Sledd and Elizabeth Dolan Wright reiterated how meaningful exposure to philanthropy and building a lifelong desire to give back, often begins with parents modeling generosity before direct conversations about it begin, and grow with authentic intergenerational conversations, engagement and support.

This week we had the pleasure of hosting an evening with Sharna Goldseker of 21/64 and author of the award-winning, best seller, Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving.

Sharna Goldseker is today’s leading expert on next generation and multigenerational family philanthropy and has developed the industry’s gold-standard tools for transforming how families who give define their values, collaborate, and govern in the decades ahead.

The evening created space for thoughtful conversation about how philanthropic giving evolves across generations and how the Community Foundation can support families by engaging next generation family members in ways that feel natural, meaningful and aligned with shared values. Thank you to our host committee and local panelists for taking part in this impactful gathering!
