The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency just announced its new report about the environmental value of applying compost for a variety of purposes – from agriculture and landscaping to stormwater management and contaminated site remediation. Increasing food waste composting will present expanded opportunities for cities and states, along with businesses and institutions, to increase their use of compost.

Virginia Composting Council has been on the move around the Commonwealth so far this spring and summer! We attended the Joint SWANA / VRA conference in May, speaking in the plenary session to industry professionals about organics diversion, and fielding a booth. We also visited multiple large scale facilities... but didn't forget about backyard and community scale systems!

This was a bare patch in our yard where I had compost delivered this spring. We moved most of it and randomly decided to plant a rhododendron and a circle of pumpkin seeds to see what happened. Nothing grew in this spot last year - not even grass - and yet it appears every single pumpkin seed has popped up! I have no idea what we’ll do with all these pumpkins, but they definitely make a great advertisement for McGill SoilBuilder!

Special thanks to Spotsylvania County, Virginia’s Public Works for providing the Livingston’s Blend compost for our planting table at Dominion Energy Riverrock last weekend! The table was a huge hit for kids and adults alike. We can’t wait to see all the marigolds in a few weeks! 🌼

There’s one more day of Dominion Energy Riverrock tomorrow (Sunday) from 12-5! The Virginia Composting Council is at the Green Team booth all day to answer your composting questions! Kids of all ages (adults too!) can learn to mix compost and soil and plant a marigold to take home in a Green Paper Products compostable cup! 🌼
