Performing Statistics

Performing Statistics Performing Statistics is a national cultural organizing project based in Richmond, Virginia that uses

We are a community of creative changemakers and credible messengers that connect young people impacted by the juvenile justice system with artists, lawyers, and advocates to imagine a world without youth prisons. Young people in our program create art to share their experiences navigating the school-to-prison pipeline and their vision for a world without prisons. We then connect their work to poli

cy and law-makers in the education, law enforcement, and juvenile justice systems in order to transform a culture and climate that criminalizes and incarcerates young people rather than invests in community-based alternatives. We were founded in 2014 by our Creative Director Mark Strandquist along with Engagement Director Gina Lyles and Project Director Trey Hartt. We were a program of ART 180 until July 2019 when we became an independent project fiscally sponsored by Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs. We are located in Richmond, Virginia inside Studio Two Three, a community print shop and artist studio.

On Earth Day we look to a future when our landscapes are prison free! We are so grateful for all of the time we get to spend envisioning that world with the youth who are building it. 👏👏👏 To all the youth holding institutions accountable today!

This mural was painted in 2020 across the street from the police station in Richmond VA. We collaborated with & .
The mural was rigged with audio that tripped when people walked by so as cops walked to work... They were serendaded by youth voices talking about abolitionist dreams and liberation.

"In Our Free Future, No Young Soul Will Fall!" - lyric from the song "No Youth Prisons" by . This dreamy billboard floated over the leafless trees of Chicago last winter. In the first draft of this incredible design by , Kofi had huge blue wings. The team asked that they be removed feeling like they were unnecessary. Honestly the adults at were a little sad but it totally works and looks amazing. It's a lesson in trusting youth vision and creating collaborations with artists who are committed to listening. You can use the QR code in slide 2 to hear the "No Kids In Prison" song.

The Abolitionist nightscape complete with giant gorgeous moths, and youth power glowing in the light of the moon was just an incredible when it hit the street in Chicago. It never gets old to see youth/artist collaborations take up public space.

"We want to create a spectacle of signage we can use over and over again at multiple locations."

In our endless effort to create tools for campaigns that are powerful to use, fun to create & bring the big ideas of young people to life...we made these sign sculptures with .khadar & Care Not Control in Philly. The coolest part about these things as reusable objects is that you can unbolt the shapes & move them around.

Plus how revolutionary is a royalty meets ninja turtles color scheme!!!???

"In a World Without Youth Prisons, the World No Longer Works Against Me. It Feels Like Running Through a Field of Sunflowers." Legislators in St Paul are getting lucky and will be bumping into a 2nd run of this billboard as they head to work making laws that impact youth lives.

As spring begins to nurture wildflowers and windy afternoons, we can look to nature as our guide for freedom. Youth leaders in MN from wrote the beautiful messaging on this billboard created in collaboration with . worked with Nadia, one of the youth leaders to create this magical portrait.

In a landscape without prisons, sunflowers and so many plants lead the way. If you haven't read The Abolitionist Field Guide by our friends ... Be sure to get yourself one!

Patches! Patches! Patches!
Both & created jackets and used patches as a way to deliver messaging.

Care Not Control decided to play with futuristic glow in the dark designs. End Youth Prisons MN used inspiration from NASCAR racing jackets & street signs. .khadar transformed the ideas of the organizers into this amazing series of patch designs! Good ole carried the vision through the finish line.

The incredible logo of was created by . The organizers were excited to include it on their jackets so we pulled in to do special giant patches. He sourced materials from the garment district in LA & sewed for 2 days straight so the vision could be realized!

At every tour stop we held swag making workshops where the public could make totes using all the the patches. Abolitionist swag forever!

From our first conversation with , they wanted to lift up the impact has had on creating a culture of excessive surveillance and normalization of the criminalization of young people in Minneapolis. Almost every young person in the room had a personal story of being followed or targeted by security while in the store.

They were interested in creating a graphic tee that exposed the true nature of Target which was founded and continues to be based in Minneapolis. The organizers wanted to emphasize how the company’s own branding speaks to the reality of the brand. , our event coordinator, supported us to pull in & .psd to bring messaging created by EYP to life & print shirts.

shared the work of from, “Targeted: How America’s Retail Darling Drives Youth Incarceration in Minneapolis,” Based on .riot Investigative Series: 21st Century Jim Crow in the North Star City. held a workshop with the organizers from EYP sharing how their experiences aligned with his research. worked with us directly to distill mountains of information into a piece focused on youth and craft a list of demands.

As we worked to create something focused on youth experiences and Target’s impact on youth incarceration, found “Keep it 100” a song by: Crescent Moon, DeAundre Dent and Ace about The Downtown 100, a list of youth harassed for years by Downtown Improvement District officers. knew this group through Kulture Klub Collaborative, connected us and they generously gave permission to include it as part of the sculpture. The song speaks directly to their experiences.

Once we saw how much Target had invested, we wanted to make these cash connections explicit. 🙏 Andra from 360 Property Solutions who helped make Target bucks. ✨Terry from Property Guardians & Andra built a clothes rack that we could cover in surveillance cameras. & Nick Popovici crushed the uniform ex*****on. & sourced perfect hangers to pull it all together.

Over the past 3 years, we’ve spent a lot of time “walking around” on google maps searching for strong billboard locations. Sometimes everything looks amazing and then when it goes up, there's a tree that did not have leaves on maps suddenly covering our beautiful artwork.

But sometimes, there are gifts that we couldn’t curate or imagine and this is one!

“Freedom means Love, Not Incarceration, we can make our own choices and experiences.” is messaging that comes from poetry created by during summer workshops with campaign members in the community and inside Cook County Jail. Throughout all of our collaborations with Final 5, they were thinking about how to include the youth they work with who are still incarcerated. Writing the poetry for the billboards is just one example of their consistent creativity aimed at bringing voices from inside, out to audiences who need to hear these perspectives. (more to share on this soon!)

This piece is a collaboration between & Final five featuring campaign members Malika & Jay. Photo of this billboard and reference photo taken by who rode his bike allllll around Chicago to document.

One of our favorite ways to put youth developed abolitionist messaging into the world is on swag! We want our people to be able to proudly wear the dreams we are fighting for :)

Slide 1: decided to use "Uncuff the Future," messaging created by organizers from Me, CT & NJ during our pandemic cultural organizing institute. It's beautiful when messaging resonates across campaigns. Together with .khadar they worked to create something inspired by race car aesthetics & the freedom of the Monarchs that move through the Twins Cities. How can we race towards a future where all youth are free? ✨

Slide 2: wrote an amazing song about a future where No Black Kids are in Prison. We worked together to pull out aspirational lyrics. Some of the others landed on billboards. Artist Keshun drew the birds & the PS team worked them into a design with stars from . đź’•

has worked so hard to make sure our designs are crisp & that the metallic inks are sparkling! 🙏🙏🙏

Also in 2016, organizers in VA were coming off of a huge win having just closed a youth prison. Coalition for Youth Justice, , leaders, so many people working together!

In response, our summer program focused on conversations with incarcerated youth about how $20M that was going toward youth incarceration should be invested toward their success.

worked with each young person to art direct their portrait & walked everyone through the stencil process.

These pieces were part of Truth to Power an exhibition at the 2016 DNC in Philly, part of many Justice Parade events in Richmond & most recently featured at the exhibitions in Chicago, Minnesota & Philly.
